The Single Girl’s Guide to Surviving Valentine’s Day

Okay, so you’re single and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. You’re probably wondering how you’ll be surviving Valentine’s Day. Guess what…it’s not the end of the world! I know that some people get so wrapped up in the whole idea of Valentine’s Day, harping on the fact that they are “alone,” and end up sitting curled up in bed all day, miserable and depressed. But why? Being single every other day of the year ain’t so bad, so why should Valentine’s Day be any different? That being said, here are some tips for all you single ladies out there on surviving Valentine’s day!

Don’t let it get to your head.

You were okay with not having a boyfriend yesterday, and you should be okay with not having one today. The fact of the matter is that you do not need a significant other to be happy…so this Valentine’s Day just focus on, well, being happy!

Get that bitter attitude out of here!

Many people like to take the route of blaming commercialism for Valentine’s Day – basically just another way for companies to benefit from exorbitant purchases. Some people choose to be bitter and castigate those who celebrate this holiday, saying they are simply feeding into the commercialism & consumerism that our country and society encourages. Many will proclaim that you “can’t buy love” and “you should love your S.O. the same everyday, not just on Valentine’s Day.” Well of course this is all true – the economy does benefit on February 14 and people do show their loved ones signs of affection with purchases…but what’s wrong with that? If someone wants to buy their girlfriend a box of chocolates, by all means, they should do so! Being bitter about it isn’t going to change anything except for probably just ruining your night.

Spend the night with all your single gal pals.

Just because you’re all single doesn’t mean you have to be single alone. You might as well spend quality time with your friends and those who love you in a platonic way. When you’re with friends, you generally forget about the world around you, so odds are, you won’t even remember you’re not in a relationship. Plus, who doesn’t love a good girls night!

Distract yourself.

You don’t have to spend every minute of the day thinking about the absence of a significant other. You’re allowed to enjoy yourself even if you’re dissatisfied with your status. But if you are really having a hard time getting your mind off the matter, do something you’ve always wanted to do, to distract yourself. Listen to some music, dance around the house, cook yourself a nice meal, perhaps even start a new hobby…just do something!

Celebrate loving yourself.

You don’t need validation from a partner to love and appreciate yourself. Turn the holiday centered around love into the chance to make sure you properly love and accept yourself. It may not always be easy, but if it means treating yourself to a spa day, a mani/pedi, or a vacation, so be it.

Read a book or binge watch a television show.

I have a never ending list of shows and books I intend to read, so why not use this free time to check things off your entertainment to-do list. No better way to waste the day than with 10 hours of your new favorite addiction…but maybe stray away from the rom coms today 😉

Go outside and explore the outdoors while enjoying solitude.

You don’t have to be cooped up inside, letting your thoughts get the best of you. Going outside and looking at the beauty of nature is something that always cheers me up. Take a breath and clear your head, enjoy the world around you. I’d say the beauty of nature surpasses a store bought bundle of roses any day!

Remember that it’s just another day.

Seriously, sit back and think about it. Valentine’s Day is no different than any other day. Nothing has changed! You may still be single, but you are also STILL fabulous! Just because you haven’t met “the one” quite yet, doesn’t mean you’re bound to be alone forever. You will find someone when the time is right; so sit tight and go buy yourself a nice box of chocolates, you deserve it.
