5 Simple Items To Decorate Your Dorm

At some point in your college life, you may end up living in a dorm room. This will be your home away from home, and what better way is there to make the space your own than with a bit of decorating? These five simple items will go a long way to help you create a room that will bring you comfort and allows you to express your personality.

1. Bedspreads and Pillows

Bedspreads and pillows are some of the most basic ways to add a little ‘you’ to your room. Many college shopping sites offer a variety of designs and colors to fit every style and budget. Neutrals add warmth and create a cozy feel, but you can also show off your fun side with a splash of bright colors, a bold print, or both with a reversible bedspread!

The selections are endless, and chances are you will find the perfect bedding to create the look you want. A simple way to accessorize without breaking the bank is to get a couple throw pillows. They are great accent pieces and come in a range of sizes, shapes, and textures with all sorts of fun messages to express yourself.

2. Plants

Bring nature into your room with plants. Not only will it liven up your living space, but plants have a relaxing effect which is beneficial for any college student. Plants freshen up dorm room air too! Worried you won’t have time (or a green thumb) to care for a plant? Stick with low-maintenance plants such as a Spider plant, Pothos or Snake plant.

Another popular choice for many college students is a succulent. Succulents come in many varieties and are perfect for a busy college student on the go. They are small desert plants that usually only need watering about once a week at most. To help you find the perfect plant that fits your lifestyle and personality, visit any plant nursery to get expert advice on the right variety.

3. Lights

While it may seem redundant, lights are a great way to liven up your space. Fairy lights are a popular choice in many dorm rooms and come in several colors and styles. String them up on your wall or put them in a mason jar and make your own lantern, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

For a more practical lighting fixture, desk lamps are not only decorative but are essential for the nightly study sessions at your desk. You can find them in a variety of sizes, styles and colors. Some desk lamps are adjustable and have multiple lighting levels as an added function. You can purchase them at an office supply store, Ikea, or from online retailers such as Amazon, these little guys are an easy find.

4. Posters and Photos

Dorm room walls are blank and dreary, and perfect for you to turn into your own masterpiece. Fill it with posters from your favorite tv show, band, athlete or painter. Hang up pictures of you and your friends and family, the wall is your canvas and you are the artist. If you don’t have any pictures or posters, there are plenty of wall décor items on sale at college shops online. Motivational messages, wooden signs and more are all available for you to express yourself.

Most colleges don’t allow any nailing or painting of the walls so make sure to use items such as self-adhesive tape or blue painter’s tape, to avoid any damage to the room when you remove the items at the end of the year.

5. Furniture

Dorm rooms are small, so you must find ways to make space in any way you can. You can use small furniture items to help provide storage while adding some extra style to your room. A small beanbag chair for guests? Cute and functional. What about a drawer cart on wheels? Now you have extra storage and display space for all your items!

A small table, compact crate, or a trendy storage trunk can also go a long way to make your room feel more like home.
