Throughout our lives, we go through multiple changes and phases. It’s not uncommon to experiment with different styles or interests. For scene kids, that time was filled with band tees, rebellion, and bright colors. Here are 15 signs you went through a “Scene Phase.”
Every scene kid knew a wristband was the perfect accessory for any outfit. While most people stick to one or two bracelets, scene kids would layer multiple wristbands up their arms. Whether it was a wristband of your favorite band or a catchy phrase, it was another way to show your sense of style. Best of all, with hundreds of options, you could change them based on your outfit or keep the same one’s year around.
You weren’t a true scene kid unless your legs were suffocating in your skinny jeans. Despite the limited movement and multiple wedgies, scene kids were adamant about wearing skinny jeans for any occasion. With colors ranging from black to pastel pink and neon green, skinny jeans were the perfect way to catch someone’s attention.
Within seconds of hearing the piano keys, every scene kid rejoiced at the sound of “Welcome To The Black Parade” by MCR. With hits like “I’m Not Okay”, “Famous Last Words”, and “Bulletproof Heart”, MCR will always get a crowd of scene kids to belt out their hearts with their middle fingers in the air. Despite the band’s decision to split in 2013, every scene kid had a special place in their heart for MCR.
If you were to look inside any scene kid’s closet, it would be easy to assume that 90% of their clothes were purchased from Hot Topic. While preppy kids were accustomed to walking into Hollister with pounds of perfume hitting their face, scene kids would find comfort from Hot Topic’s loud music and edgy clothing choices. It was the perfect place to pick up an abundance of band tees and vinyl.
Coon Tails, also called Racoon Tails, where strands of hair that were horizontally dyed two colors. While some scene kids stuck to traditional blonde and black strips, others experimented with purple and pink, green and blue, any color combination you can imagine. Although the process of creating a coon tail could be long and tedious, it didn’t stop us scene kids from achieving the ultimate look.
Similar to wristbands, crazy belts were essential to every scene kid’s outfit. Whether it be studded, decorated with fake bullets or a spooky design, belts made a statement while also keeping those skinny jeans from falling. Between moshing and crowd surfing, a belt was a scene kid’s best asset.
Although we hate to admit it, we’ve all used this phrase once or twice throughout our scene phase. Worst of all, this sentence was usually followed up with, “It’s not a phase, Mom.” While our parents tried to assure us that we would grow out of emo bands and our dark styles, we knew that being a scene kid was who we really were. Now we look back on it and realize our parents were right.
While it’s argued the ’80s had the biggest hair, scene kids knew how to go to town with a comb and a can of hairspray. Your hair wasn’t considered big enough unless every root was teased to the core. For every scene kid, teasing your hair and giving it that extra volume was crucial.
Despite multiple hours in the sun and hours of walking on a dirt-covered parking lot, Warped Tour was the biggest event for every scene kid to attend. With multiple stages and dozens of musicians performing, Warped Tour was the perfect opportunity to hear your favorite songs and meet the people who inspired you every day. From the moment Warped Tour ended, scene kids were counting down the next 364 days until they could go again.
Dying your hair as a scene kid was an absolute must. Were you even a scene kid if you didn’t dye your hair multiple colors? Whether it was hot pink, bright red, or turquoise, scene kids found pride in the funky colors they chose to rock. Dying your hair was another way to express yourself and stand out from a crowd.
Despite our love for heavy metal and rock, scene kids had a soft side as well. With songs like “Terrible Things”, “Miserable At Best”, and “I Swear This Time I Mean It”, it was hard to not shed a tear or sob uncontrollably. If you didn’t listen to one of these songs while crying alone in your closet, you weren’t a true scene kid.
To this day, Brendon Urie is considered an idol to scene kids. With his ability to put on a flawless show, his multi-talented background with acting, singing, and dancing, as well as his ability to make his voice go from super high to very deep, Urie amazed scene kids everywhere. Even if Panic! wasn’t your favorite band, Brendon Urie was highly respected for being a fantastic musician.
Using the word “Rawr” became highly popular among scene kids. Whether you sent it as a text or edited it across your bathroom selfie, it wasn’t uncommon for scene kids to use it throughout their scene phase. Why? We have no idea, but looking back on it, it was super cringe-worthy.
While every scene kid aspired to have the same hair and style as Hayley Williams, her singing was just as impressive. The moment “Misery Business” played over the speakers, scene kids belted out the words and threw up their devil horns. Once the solo hit, every scene kid felt like a rock star as they played their air guitar.
Despite growing out of the bands we once listened to religiously, we know every word to every song. For some of us, our scene phase was the best years of our lives. We were able to meet our favorite bands, express ourselves in the most eccentric ways, and formed a family among our fellow scene kids. While some us of look back on our scene phase and cringe, we know it will always be a part of who we are.
