10 Signs You Grew Up In The DMV

If you were raised in DC, Maryland, or Virginia, you know that the culture is unlike anything else. From our signature slang to the fantastic food, you can’t help but love where you grew up. The DMV was the best place to live as a kid, even if your college friends disagree. Keep reading for the 10 signs you grew up in the DMV!

1. DMV stands for “DC, Maryland, and Virginia,” and not the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Your non DC-native friends don’t understand, but you always know deep down the true definition of the acronym.

2. When someone asks you where you’re from, you never know if you should say DC or just your small hometown.

It’s easier to just tell people you’re from DC instead of avoiding long explanations of where you’re actually from. However, no one really knows how far “the DC area” actually reaches before it isn’t accurate anymore.

3. You’ve been lucky enough to experience all four seasons growing up.

Sure, the “bipolar” weather wasn’t always ideal, but you know how much you enjoyed winter, spring, summer, and fall while growing up.

4. Old Bay is your drug.

Fries, pizza, soup, chips… You put that beloved seasoning on everything. You wouldn’t be caught dead without a can of Old Bay in your purse or your dorm.

5. As a kid, you couldn’t help but brag you lived by “Disney World”.

Enough said.

6. You’ve seen DC tourists too many times to count.

Wait, you’re telling me museums aren’t free everywhere?

7. The DMV vocabulary doesn’t compare to anything else.

Siced, hip, moe, bet…. The slang you learned as a kid is unrecognizable to your friends from other parts of the country.

8. You aren’t sure whether you were considered part of the North or South.

The Mason-Dixon line is the “technical” determinant, but you never really felt like you totally belonged to either group.

9. Snow days were the norm.

But of course we can’t forget having to wake up at 5 am to check for last-minute school cancellations.

10. You know the DMV is unlike any other place, and you wouldn’t have traded growing up there for the world.

We were lucky to have grown up with mountains, beaches, waterfalls (and much more) right at our fingertips. I love you, DMV.
