12 Signs You Grew Up In Harrisburg, North Carolina

If you’re from Harrisburg, North Carolina (aka “The Burg”) there are some things that nobody else except people from your town will understand. Keep reading to see if you can identify with these 12 signs you grew up in Harrisburg, North Carolina!

1. Nobody knows where Harrisburg is

If anyone asks, just say you’re from Charlotte. Trust me, it’s better than saying near Concord or even saying near the Speedway because apparently, some people don’t know where those are either.

2. There’s a chance one of your teachers also taught one of your parents

You walk into the classroom and meet the teacher for the first time only to realize they taught your mom or dad. It’s a small world after all.

3. The world stops for football Sundays

Some business are closed and everyone’s schedule revolves around what time the game is going to come on. If you ask to do anything after kick-off, the answer is no.

4. It is very possible to fit all four seasons in one day

It’s freezing in the morning, at mid-afternoon you’re sweltering and by evening you put your light jacket back on. Dressing in light layers is the key.

5. If you’re on Facebook you probably know of the chaotic wonderfulness that is the Harrisburg Forum

If you need to know anything going on in our town, or just want to catch up on gossip, the Forum is the place to go. Oh, and make sure to read the comments section!

6. You know the names of all the other schools in your county

Your school has played every other school in the county numerous times and you probably know a good handful of people from those schools as well. You might even know names and stories of teachers in some of those other schools. In the end, you’re all friends.

7. Rocky River Coffee and Sonic are the go-to hang out places

If you go to Rocky River enough, the baristas will memorize your order, which is kind of nice. And Sonic is basically the epitome of the stereotypical high school hangout that you’d see on TV.

8. But if you’re bored out of your mind, Concord Mills is always there

The mall is the first thing that comes to mind if you’re looking for a way to kill time, even if nothing in the stores ever change and the traffic is horrendous. You know you grew up in Harrisburg, North Carolina with this one.

9. You can’t go out in public without seeing someone you know

In a small town, everybody knows everybody for the most part, which means if you step foot outside of your house you’ve got to look at least somewhat presentable.

10. There are way too many grocery stores

There are at least five grocery stores in our small part of the world, basically one on every street corner. Tell me again why building a Publix was necessary if we already have a Food Lion, an Aldi, a Lowes Foods and two Harris Teeters.

11. Construction is always going on

At least one road is closed at any given time. New bridges or stores pop-up all the time, and if you’re gone for more than a few months you might not recognize it by the time you get back. After a while, you become an expert at figuring out new ways to get somewhere.

12. You can always tell the locals from the non-locals

If their appearance or license plates aren’t enough, then their last name and accent will tell you everything you need to know.
