There are few book series more beloved and well known than Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling. With this year marking 20 years since the publication of volume 2, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the characters and stories remain as popular and relatable as they were in 1998. Particularly relatable is the muggle-born member of the golden trio, Hermione Granger.
Always the top of her class and ready to save the day with something from the reading list, there is a little of Hermione in all of us. Whilst she goes on to become a hero and beloved by those around her, initially she is often a little left out of things and not always up to date with the latest trends where she is the necessary academics. Whether or not you know your spells inside out yet or not, here are 10 signs you are secretly Hermione Granger.
Hermione wouldn’t be Hermione without, well… books. There isn’t a book that she hasn’t read, and that’s definitely the case for you. When it comes to class, you’re always at least a week ahead and up to date with the relevant further reading. It’s unsurprising that you completely thrive in the library, in fact it’s more like your second home!
Studying is so much fun, a Twenty-First Century Hermione would say whilst watching studytube videos and organising her stationery draw. A key element to your Hermione persona is that you enjoy learning so much that your studies are always done in a great amount of depth. Have you done the further reading for class, and maybe a bit extra too? Of course!
All good things come from pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and, although you can be a little timid at first, you are more than capable of rising to a challenge. In fact, you recognise it as the best way to improve. In the absence of a time turner, you are adept at finding balance in your schedule and finding a healthy way to keep challenging and improving yourself.
One of your key traits is your loyalty, marking you one of the best people to be friends with. You’re always there for those that matter to you, making sure they are able to find their own feet when they’re struggling and even offering a spot of tutoring if you notice them struggling in class.
That loyalty to stand by and defend those that matter to you isn’t always easy to put into practice, but you never bat an eyelid when it comes to staying true to what counts.
Hermione Granger has Crookshanks of course (much to Ron’s disdain), so you’re a cat person. All witches need a sidekick and there is no better companion than a cat. They don’t talk too much but they’re excellent listeners, plus incredibly cute!
Because you’re always striving to do your best, to make the most of things and keep moving forward, the consequence is that often you are more stressed than you need to be. This is because of the caution and care you provide everything, as well as linked habits of over worrying.
It’s completely natural to feel this way with how hard you work, but make sure you remember to keep finding that balance – even Hermione Granger needs to have a break sometimes!
Timid and shy? Only to the unknowing stranger! To those who know you, you have a wicked sense of humour and are so much fun to hang out with. When you’re around, adventure always seems to follow not far behind.
Plus, all of those books you read make you an excellent conversation partner with a head full of dreams that will lead to the best weekend plans.
That bravery and loyalty you extend to those you care about is equally applicable to everything. Even in the hardest situations, you know that the right thing to do always comes first. This is why Hermione is in Gryffindor and not Ravenclaw: Bravery. It takes courage to speak up and do what you know is right and in the end, it makes you a better person overall.
Whilst you don’t follow crowds and you are independent in so many ways, your love of learning and determination to succeed can often be because you want to please others such as your family or teachers. Making other people happy makes you happy, but can also add pressure.
But keep at heart a reminder of that famous Hermione quote and you’ll always be able to balance out the two:
Books! And cleverness! There are more important things – friendship and bravery.
From your passion for equal rights for wizards and house elves to that determination you have to ace the next upcoming deadline, you always commit yourself fully to whatever tasks are at hand. That complete focus and resilience mark you out from any crowd and show you have what it takes to achieve your dreams.
With a clear knowledge of what it is you want to do and an idea of where to start, nothing can stop you from changing the world for the better.
