12 Signs That It’s Time To Move On

The beginnings of new relationships can be emotionally draining and confusing. A lack of honesty, and willingness to be upfront about what each person wants can lead to dragging out the inevitable, and someone will become hurt as a result. This means neither person is able to move on when they want to.

Here are some signs that you should stop waiting for them and just move on.

1. They are not reaching out.

Look at your text messages and see if there are more blue or white text message bubbles. Are you sending paragraphs of text and receiving one sentence or one-worded responses in return? If they are not responding in a timely manner, at all, or are not matching your level of emotional investment it might be a sign that it’s time to move on. You deserve someone who reaches out first, and matches your level of communication. Relationships cannot be one-sided.

2. They seem distant or disinterested.

A person who always backs out of plans, cancels them, and makes no effort in rescheduling is probably someone who is not interested in you. Spending time in person is the best and most effective way for two people to bond and grow closer together. If they are refusing to spend time with you virtually or in-person now, it is a sign that they are not romantically interested in you. Are you the only one pushing for in-depth conversation and sharing emotional experiences? This is a sign that they are not as interested in you as you are into them.

3. They won’t make a decision.

Maybe they have hinted or said that they would be interested in being more than friends, but they keep pushing off deciding if or when they want you both to move forward. If they are going back and forth, or keep coming up with reasons not to go in the direction you want, pack up your bags and move on! You deserve a partner who is decisive and knows what they want.

4. They are talking to other people.

If you are not the only person they are talking to, realize that you are just one of their many options. They will not commit until they find the person they are most interested in, or may not make a decision at all. Some people like exploring their options until they reach a decision. Others like to string people along simply because they know they can. Break the cycle and end it before you waste more of your precious time!

5. They talk to you about other people.

A major sign they are not fully invested in you is if they are telling you about the other people they are talking to. Whether this is an intentional move on their part, or on accident, if they feel comfortable enough to tell you about the other people in their life they are considering having a relationship with, this means you are not at the top of their list. Go ahead and kill the potential of that relationship before they can and find someone who puts you at the top of their list.

6. They try to force you to move on.

If someone is trying to set you up with their friends, push you onto dating apps, or anything else along these lines, this is a sign they want you to move on. Maybe they point out other people to you while you two are spending time together and try to push you to start a conversation. Them wanting you to move on is the ultimate sign that they do not want to pursue a relationship, but do not want to flat out say so.

7. They are inconsistent.

You two talked and both agreed to move forward toward a relationship, but the following week they talk about you being with someone else. Maybe you worked through all the potential obstacles, and then they say that if you were meant to be, those would not even be factors. If someone keeps making excuses, move on before you allow them to cause more damage or waste more of your time.

8. They will not commit.

Sure, they might have said they wanted to pursue something with you but refused to put any sort of label on it. Perhaps you thought you both were dating and they say you two are just hanging out. You deserve a mature relationship with a mature person who is not afraid to put a label on whatever stage of that relationship you are in.

9. They say they are not interested.

Believe it or not, this is not a turn off for some people. In fact, this flips a switch in some people’s minds that makes them want to chase after the other person even more. If someone is upfront enough to say they do not want to pursue a relationship, that is a clear sign it is time for you to move on.

10. They won’t make up their mind.

Maybe they are choosing between two people, or they simply will not make a decision one way or another about you. You deserve someone who wants to be with you, and are the only person on their list. If they are being indecisive, move on to the next person.

11. They change the subject.

Someone who refuses to have serious conversations and changes the subject once you start getting deep is not someone you want to be in a relationship with. Their inability to stay on one topic at a time is a major red flag, especially when it comes to discussing serious topics. Take the hint, and leave them in the dust.

12. They aren’t chasing you.

While there should certainly be an effort on both parties’ part, but if someone is not putting as much or more effort into the relationship as you are, this is a sign they simply are not interested in you. You should not have to question what your relationship status or label is with them on a daily basis. In fact, if you have to question it at all, and they refuse to put a label on it, go ahead and move on to someone who does not make you question everything. You deserve better!

Hi! My name is Hannah Warren and I just graduated from Mercer University with a B.A. in English. During my time at Mercer, I studied both Creative Writing and Media Studies so I have dabbled in multiple writing genres including fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and more! Playwrighting and nonfiction are my favorite genres because more people relate to and understand the work when it is raw, genuine, and mentions different problems that most people are familiar with or have experienced first-hand. I have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them, but I am proud to say I am drafting a romance novel that I hope to have published one day! Thank you for taking the time to get to know me, and I hope you will continue to read more of my little articles in the future!
