With so many options for streaming content right now, it’s easy to overlook some of the better shows out there…not on purpose, of course, but there can be so many choices that it can feel easier to just rewatch Parks and Rec for the 700th time. (And I don’t blame you).
But when you’re looking to move on from Netflix and Chill to a little Hulu and…Hang, I’ve got you covered with some options to get the ball rolling.
One of the Hulu Originals on the list includes Marvel’s underrated show, Runaways, which has just been renewed for a third season (phew) so don’t worry about canceling and stuff yet. It’s staying on Hulu, so you have time to get caught up. The show centers on some awesome super-powered teens and their journeys as they have to run away (gasp) from certain dark powers and influences they discover at home. Things aren’t always what they seem.
If middle school was as much of a hormonal nightmare for you as it was for me, then chances are you’ll appreciate Pen15, a show about the ups-and-downs of this awkward age group, made from (and starring) a more mature audience. Almost painfully relatable at points, Pen15 will remind you why you’re glad you’re not in middle school anymore.
Based on the novel by the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian tale that isn’t for the faint of heart. In a world where everything is now controlled by a fascist regime that wants to control women’s bodies and their reproductive and sex lives in the name of the greater good, modesty, and order, this show may be a little triggering for some audience members. Haunting and dark, but perhaps more than a little timely.
If the concept of two women and their obsession with one another doesn’t sound appealing to you, then maybe adding in the fact that one of them is an assassin, and the other (a member of M16 British Intelligence) who is in way, way over her head will. It’s dark, funny, sexy and incredibly addicting. Let Killing Eve be your next obsession.
Black-ish is a hilarious family comedy that deals with the Johnson family and their seemingly perfect lives. As they begin to see that their lives aren’t actually so perfect, Black-ish deals with important topics and issues surrounding class, race, and privilege. Just renewed for a sixth season and granted not one but two spin-offs (Grown-ish and Mixed-ish), it’s clear Black-ish isn’t done telling it’s story yet.
“A long time ago/We used to be friends/But I haven’t thought of you lately at all…” The lyrics to Veronica Mars’ theme song seems even more appropriate now that it’s back years later with a whole new season thanks to Hulu. The daughter of a private investigator, Veronica Mars can’t help but pick up a few things, skills she takes with her through high school and college, solving everything from minor cases to much darker overarching plots. Now in Season 4, we get an adult Veronica working side-by-side with her dad.
I realize this isn’t a Hulu Original, but if you still haven’t seen Brooklyn 99, now is the time! If you want a show that’s wicked funny, with a cast of characters that you want to be able to see as family, Brooklyn 99 is the show for you. It’s also a great palette cleanser after watching some of these more dark dramas…yeesh.
