12 Shows To Binge Watch Over Winter Break

As Christmas is quickly approaching and the semester comes to an end, there will be plenty of time to binge-watch when you return home for the break. Grab a couple of friends, sit by the fire, and snuggle while watching some of Netflix’s best shows. It is no longer 12 days of Christmas– it’s 12 days of binge-watching! Keep reading for the shows to binge watch over winter break!

1. Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is a Netflix classic that every girl must watch (and re-watch) in her lifetime. It is filled with 6 seasons of enduring drama, heart ache, and scandalous delight, all of which takes place in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Following the lives of several wealthy prep school teenagers as they venture into adulthood is quite intriguing as infamous love stories develop and social hierarchies are challenged under the rule of a ruthless, anonymous blogger.

2. 90210

Think of 90210 as a West Coast version of Gossip Girl. This show takes place in Beverly Hills, CA where  a group of teens juggle high school and life beyond with the added pressures of fame, relationships, and life or death decision-making. This beach-front drama is bound to enthrall you if you have a proclivity to watch drama-infused shows filled with unexpected hook-ups, cheating scandals, drug addictions, and ever-changing love stories.

3. Awkward

If you’re looking for a light-hearted comedic drama then this is the perfect show for you. Awkward chronicles the life of a confused and love-stricken teenager named Jenna Hamilton who is struggling to form her true identity and catch the attention of Matty McKibben, Palos Hill’s major hearth throb. This show deserves a 10/10 for realistically depicting the ups and downs of high school in a hilariously satisfying way. Note: this show is only available on Amazon Prime, not Netflix.

4. The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries is one of my personal favorites. It describes the life of Carrie Bradshaw, a Junior in high school who decides to forgo her destined career path in order to follow her dream of working in fashion. Carrie lives the double life– a teenager who attends school in the small town of Castleberry, CT and a fashionista who interns for a top-notch fashion magazine in the heart of New York City. From the dynamic plot that that takes place in the 1980s to Carrie’s charming love-interest, Sebastian, this show can easily compel you to watch a season or two in one sitting.

5. One Tree Hill

This drama is a classic early 2000s show that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Starring Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, One Tree Hill details the lives of two high school basketball players that grew up on opposite ends of the socio-economic latter but somehow managed to become close later on. The plot twist is that the two have more in common than a love for basketball– they share the same father. Talk about family drama.

6. That 70s Show

That 70s Show is the perfect sitcom to watch when you need a laugh. The diverse spectrum of characters adds humor and uniqueness to the story of a close group of high school friends from the 1970s. These friends often get bored in the small town of Point Place, Wisconsin and resort to amusing each other in an hilariously entertaining way.

7. Fuller House

If you’re a fan of Full House, you’ll love this show which continues the memorable plot several years later. DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy return to the screen for this family sitcom while the former cast members play a role by guest starring. If you want the perfect dose of nostalgia and holiday cheer, I highly recommend checking out this show. Season 2 was just released on Netflix!

8. Baby Daddy

In this hilarious sitcom, a young and naive man named Ben Wheeler is forced to raise his daughter Emma after his one-night stand abandons both him and the baby. From managing a bar to maintaining a love life, Ben struggles to balance all of the priorities in his life and he only gets by with the help of his family and friends. You’re bound to love this show as you laugh at Ben’s stupidity and the struggles he and his immature friends face.

9. Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin is one of my all-time favorite shows. This satire contains the perfect blend of comedy, romance, and drama while it pokes fun at telenovelas. From the Spanish dialogue (don’t worry, subtitles are present) to the drama surrounding Jane’s artificial insemination, this telenovela tells the intriguing story of a virgin who was accidentally impregnated. Should she marry the adorably lovable cop Michael that she’s been engaged to or should she let her feelings for the baby’s father ruin her steady relationship? Watch this riveting drama to find out!

10. The 100

If you’re looking for an action-packed sci-fi thriller, then I highly recommend The 100. This is the story of  100 delinquent teenagers who are shuttled to earth for the first time since a nuclear apocalypse. Their task is to find out if earth is capable of sustaining human life so that more survivors can be sent down to repopulate it. This primitive yet space-age plot will surely capture your interest as love scandals, betrayal, and natural selection threaten the stability of these teens and their attempt to reclaim the earth.

11. How To Get Away With Murder

If mystery, murder, and law intrigue you, then watching this show is a must. Here, a group of intelligent law students intern for the top criminal defense attorney of the area and they subsequently become involved in a heinous murder scandal that threatens to take them all down. You will soon find out that sometimes those who are meant to protect the law are those who end up breaking it the most.

12. Scandal

Extramarital affairs, power-hungry politicians, and scandals dominate this political thriller. Olivia Pope runs a crisis management firm that fixes the scandal and misconduct that manifests in the D.C. area. Bailing out foreign ambassadors and keeping the big dogs out of jail is her specialty. From running presidential campaigns to locking lips with the president, Olivia Pope may stir up more trouble than she tries to fix.
