Sex Is Good For You? Its Health Benefits Say Yes

Sex is good for you? We all know sex is fun, but there’s more than one reason why a night between the sheets is worth it. If you want to clear up your complexion, improve your mood, and even boost your immune system, it turns out all you might need is a little bit more sex.

There have been multiple studies that look at what benefits sex can have, and almost all of them leave us with a number of surprising and unexpected health benefits.

Sex can act as a Pain Relief

According to a Stanford University study, even looking at your partner can help to ease off pain, whether you’ve got a papercut or period cramps. As if you needed another reason to stare at your partner for the rest of the day! Various other studies have also found that reaching orgasm can help to stave of cramps, dull pain sensations and even help with migraines.

Sex Improves Your Immune System

People having regular sex are actually better at defending their bodies against germs and viruses. Wilkes University, in Pennsylvania, found that college students having sex at least once a week had higher levels of a certain antibody – the one that fights the germs – than students having sex less often. It’s all in the science!

It Lowers Your Blood Pressure

A Scottish study in Biological Psychology found that having regular sex can help to keep your blood pressure steady when you’re stressed or worried, and can even bring it down a little on average. Plus, if you needed another reason to have some fun tonight, sex can raise your endorphin levels, which are the hormones that reduce stress and improve your mood.

Sex is Good for Your Heart

Not only does it count as exercise – it burns around five calories per minute and raises your heart rate the same way running on a treadmill would – sex is also extremely good for your heart. It can help to keep your estrogen and testosterone levels in balance, lowering your risk of osteoporosis and even heart disease. One study found that men who had sex at least twice a week were almost half as likely to die of heart disease than men who had sex rarely. This is jsut one of the signs sex is good for you!

You’ll Sleep Better

The National Sleep Foundation state that orgasms can help you to feel more relaxed and sleepy thanks to the release of the hormone prolactin. This means that you’ll drift off easier, so don’t get worried if you and your partner head straight to sleep after sex, and you’ll also wake up feeling more refreshed. And it works both ways; getting more sleep can help to up your sex drive, too, according to a study in the Journal of Sex Medicine.

Sex can Make Your Skin Glow

Ever been told you have a ‘morning after’ glow? It turns out that’s not just a myth. A mix of the endorphins from sex, heightened mood, and ‘flush’ from being aroused can make your skin not only glow, but can reduce signs of ageing too. Plus, a reduction in stress can be good for your skin in the long run.

It can Help You Connect with Your Partner

Multiple studies have shown that couples with a regular sex life are not only happier in their relationship, but less likely to cheat. Sex releases the hormone oxytocin, known as the ‘love hormone’ because it plays a large part in social bonding and can bring you and your partner much closer.

So it turns out sex is good for you, in more ways than one. If you needed an excuse to get busy between the sheets tonight, take your pick! Do you think sex is good for you? Tell us in the comments!
