5 Secretly Sugary Drinks You Should Avoid In The Morning
Sugar is the root of all evil if you are looking to lose weight or be healthy. Yes, you can eat fruit and it is a great source of vitamins and nutrients, however, people tend to consume way over their recommended intake of sugar. As a reference point, women should aim for 25 grams of sugar per day, and men should aim for 36 grams of sugar. Most Americans do not abide by these rules and suffer the consequences physically. Here are 5 secretly sugary drinks you should try to avoid.
1. Fruit Juice
Fruit Juices are incredibly high in sugar. Unfortunately, all fruit juices, even 100% natural fruit juice with no sugar added are, in fact, super high in sugar. Instead, skip the fruit in juice form and eat raw fruits.
2. Hot Chocolate/Vanilla Chai
If you don’t like hot coffee in the cold winter months you might opt for hot chocolate or vanilla chai. Unfortunately, these are loaded with sugar and no nutritional value. Okay to have once in a while, but not to make a ritual out of.
3. Sweetened Ice Tea
Tea is awesome because it is full of antioxidants, but unfortunately, the additives may cancel their health benefits out. Some bottled sweetened ice teas have 30 grams of sugar, which we know from our reference point is about our entire day’s worth of sugar in one sitting. No good.
4. Energy Drinks
You may think that grabbing a red bull on your way to class in the morning is a good idea since it is easier than coffee and has caffeine, however they are packed with sugar. Even if you drink the sugar-free version, red bull is entirely unhealthy and should be skipped altogether.
5. Fancy Coffee Drinks
Lots of people add sugar to their coffee, so if you can cut back on that great. However, if you are drinking frappes or lattes you aren’t doing yourself any favors. You are better off sticking to coffee with just milk, or adding one sweetener. If you want to feel you are drinking something a little fancier, get a coffee with steamed milk. At some cafes, you can find cinnamon next to the sugar which can add some nice flavor/festiveness.
