Road Trip Essentials

A great road trip is the bread and butter of summer break. Just get your friends together, hop in the car and drive away. Here are a few ways to be ready to have the time of your life on your road trip this summer.

1. Have a plan. Plan your entire itinerary. It may be tempting to want to improvise once you get on the road, but you’ll be thankful to have planned in advance. Map out where you want to go (parks, sights, museums, towns, food) and build your itinerary around these checkpoints so that you don’t miss anything. Make sure you know where you are going to stop, and possibly stay before you head out.

2. Be flexible. You may have a specific plan in mind, but things might change along the way, so be prepared for that. You may find a place you didn’t know about until you drove by that you want to check out, or you might experience car trouble that could throw off your whole schedule. Whatever it may be, a road trip is all about freedom and fun, so don’t let little bumps in the road get in the way of enjoying yourself.

3. Music – A solid playlist is the foundation of a good road trip. Driving seems a lot longer without one and trying to pass the obnoxious BMW is only fun for so long. Here are 10 songs to get you started. Don’t only rely on road trip “classics.” Any long song that relaxes you or keeps you going will work.

  1. American Pie, Don McLean
  2. Only The Good Die Young, Billy Joel
  3. Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin
  4. Bound 2, Kanye West
  5. The Times They Are a Changing, Bob Dylan
  6. Pompeii, Bastille
  7. Burning Love, Elvis Presley
  8. Cheerleader, OMI
  9. Is This Love, Bob Marley
  10. Fortunate Son, Creedence Clearwater Revival

You can burn some CDs with your favorite songs on them, purchase your road trip playlist on iTunes, or simply use your phone to easily play any song you want through music streaming apps. Apps like Rhapsody Unradio, Pandora, Spotify, and iheartradio are awesome apps that give you instant access to millions of songs and thousands of artists. They are also available in app stores on pretty much every device and with any service provider, including T-Mobile, which also offers unlimited data. And, even if you don’t have unlimited data, the music apps don’t use your data, so stream away! You don’t have to worry about getting an a angry call from your mom when you go over your allowed data during your trip.
