The beauty behind the millennial decade is that we can finally wear whatever we want! Meaning that the fashion trends of decades past of have all merged into this one, borrowing from another like one big closet of style and expression! Here are top 10 retro fashion trends or clothing garments that are on point in the 2010s.
Earlier in the decade, we saw girls sporting low rise jeans and shorts (some of which we probably still secretly own), but now its easier to find high-waisted garments in stores (that I find to be more figure flattering). This style was very popular from the 1930s-50s in the form of skirts, and then again popular in the 70s with bell bottoms. While we saw acid wash, not-at-all-low rise jeans a staple of the 80’s glam and 90’s grunge culture, the waist-trimming, butt-shaping silhouette disappeared in the 2000s. Luckily it’s back in all it’s slimming glory!
Ah, the burgundy lips of the ’90s. If you were to google photos of Drew Barrymore or Courtney Love from the 1990s, you’ll see them rocking a neutral eye palette paired with a berry lip. I myself am a fan of the berry, burgundy shade when black feels too harsh, but red isn’t the most complimentary and you want to tone down the bold vibrancy of red, for something more subtle. And finding burgundy lipsticks in drugstores like Walgreens is easy peasy, as it’s super trendy, and oh so beautiful for many skin-tones!
Another staple from the 90’s grunge, but also partly in the ’80s, the button down plaid flannel shirts have made a huge comeback throughout these last 9 years. They’ve become just as much as part of the “hipster” culture as they were the grunge culture. Both boys and girls of all ages can rock plaid flannel, and for many occasions. It’s a versatile garment that compliments an array of looks, styles, and figures.
Believe it or not, this skimpy little ensemble was first popularized in the 1930s (scandalous!), and while it’s never completely died down, each decade has revamped it in some way. With the 2010s being a decade of expression for young women to dress freely, and liberally, more so than some decades past, it’s no surprise the crop top has stuck around and thrived.
While the true bell bottoms of the ’70s with their ridiculously wide circumference aren’t available on demand, a similar version (that aren’t just a boot cut, I swear) are. Bell bottoms give the illusion of longer, slimmer legs, but if you’re short-legged like me, you’d want to consider tall heels so the hems don’t drag on the ground.
The mom jean never seemed very hip or cool, but they’ve made a comeback in a way that is on fleek and surprisingly figure flattering. Many young women who are not mothers, rock these jeans in a stylish way!
These could be the wide-brimmed hats gracing Audrey Hepburn that you might wear in the garden for tea, or the velvet cowboy hats that are reminiscent of Violet Harmon in American Horror Story: Murder House, which you can find at EarthBound right now. However wide the brim, these hats are complementary to many styles and outfits.
What you might think of as “poodle skirts” these were all the rage in the 1950s, as they are now, because they are stylish and figure flattering. They give the wearer that hour-glass figure other garments don’t. They can be easily dressed up or dressed down, worn modest; with heels, tights, and button down or cardigan, or they can be worn for a night out on the town in a crop top and ankle boots!
Ah, leggings. We can’t overlook these. While leggings are not being worn today in the way they were in the 1980’s they are just as popular as ever, if not more. Leggings are now being sported as everyday pants as if they were jeans, but in the ’80s the trend was to wear tunic tops and legwarmers over them. Often worn for exercise 30 years ago, now they are a fashion and leisure garment. Whenever I can find leggings with pockets big enough for my iPhone 7sPlus my day is made!
Tunic tops, which look like mini, mini dresses are long tops that can be short-sleeved, long-sleeved, cold-shoulder or tank tops. Tunics are slightly varied today in that they are shorter in the front and longer in the back, an obvious response to the legging trend (the need to cover underwear lines leggings can expose). But in their heyday, tunic tops were just simply long, loose fitting and often belted.
