DIY Memorial Day party ideas are endless. Something about our patriotic holidays gets everyone in the decorating mood. America is f*cking awesome! We’re the greatest country in the world! So to get things rolling we laid out a few of our personal favorite red, white, and blue DIY Memorial Day party ideas.
For starters, we have to decorate the party. By the time Memorial Day comes it’s almost Summer time weather, so backyard barbecue parties are always the way to go. The main attraction is going to be the tables where everyone sits down to relax, eat, and drink. So we think red, white, and blue flower cup combinations, patriotic candle holders, and bandana tablecloths are a good start. For the flowers, all you have to do is put red and white flowers in a blue cup. For the candle holders, get clear jars, take some raw rice and dye some red and blue so you can fill the jars to make them striped with American colors! (If you want a faster method, buy some colored sand.) Finally, getting a bunch of red, white, and blue bandanas and taping them down in a checkered pattern as tablecloths will tie it all together.
Once the actual tables are all squared away, it’s important to make sure the rest of the yard is just as decorative. One of our all-time favorite backyard DIY Memorial Day party ideas is lawn stars! Now, this must be a new one because we’ve never seen this before, but we’re definitely going to try it out this year. All you need is a star cutout and some spray paint. It looks great!
Usually we’d guide you with a “don’t be too stingy with the décor, but don’t overdo it either,” but on a patriotic holiday all rules go right out the window. Some of the best, easiest DIY Memorial Day party ideas are paper pinwheels, wreaths of all kinds, and makeshift American Flags. For the pinwheels, simply find any kind of red, white, and blue paper. Fold the paper like a fan and then staple or tape the ends together to make a scrunchy circle and behold! A pinwheel! Just put a bendy straw or whatever you have available through the center so you can stand it up and let it spin outside. For the Memorial Day wreaths, you can literally use -anything-.
Red, white, and blue ribbon is extremely popular. Sometimes folks just buy very bare stick wreaths or evergreen wreaths and stick bows and mini flags in them or even colored ornaments! Finally, for the makeshift flags, we’ve seen people make giant paper chains and hanging them in the semblance of the American Flag. We’ve also seen people tape red, white, and blue balloons to a wall in order of the flag! Here are some examples for you below:
What’s decorating the party is important, but not as important at what’s served at the party. DIY Memorial day party ideas for food and drink are important if you want to stand out from the rest. Ditch the same old boring beer and try some Soldier’s Sangria. There are a few ways to make it. All you really need to do is cut up some star-shaped fruit (like pineapple) with some blueberries and strawberries to mix into Sangria. There’s also a “Red, White, and Rose Sangria” that’s definitely party-worthy. For the non-alcoholic drinkers, take the idea for Soldier’s Sangria and maybe use Shirley Temples instead! That way everyone has a cup full of fun!
Other than the barbecue, there has to be snacks and samplers going around at all times and this is probably the best part of the DIY Memorial Day party ideas list. For those that are not so skilled in the kitchen, you can always do things like red, white, and blue snack mix (throw colored candies like M&Ms for the red, white, and blue part) or red, white, and blue tortilla chips and dip. The grocery stores will always have plenty for you to choose from so don’t panic! However, for the DIY-ers, we’ve got some awesome ideas.
Some go-tos on a hot day would include raspberry/strawberry, blueberry, and mini-marshmallow kabobs. Yum! Fruit and marshmallows, white chocolate pretzels, or even yogurt bites are extremely easy to blend into something patriotic. If you really want to chef it up, make some rice krispie treats cubes, stick a toothpick on top, and dip them into colored frosting and decorate them! You could also do the same thing with Oreos or any smaller cookie/treat, strawberries, pretzel sticks, etc. Parfaits are easy to make red, white, and blue too. Other things like patriotic popcorn drizzle and candy apples are great. There are so many DIY Memorial Day party ideas, there are just too many to list! Below are some more examples for you:
