10 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Date A Frat Boy

If you go to a college that has Greek life, you probably know all the “frat boy” stereotypes. They all look like the same white, skinny boy that just drinks all day long and is probably a business major. Although some frat guys are good and don’t fit into the stereotype, there are so many other more quality men that you will find in college. Here are the top 10 reasons why you just really should avoid dating a boy in a frat.

1. They just want to party with their brothers all weekend long.

Trying to plan a cute date night for just the two of you? That most likely won’t happen because during the weekend he just wants to party with his brothers. Yes,  he’ll invite you to come and bring your friends, but it’s probably only so he can bring more girls to the party to impress his “brothers.” It’s not bad to occasionally go to parties with your significant other, but every weekend? Eventually, you will get really sick of him inviting you to yet another party instead of just a chill weekend in.

2. He’ll still go to all of the social events with or without you.

Just imagine, you’re slammed with studying and you have to bail on his frat date party. He’ll still go without you and probably with a random sorority girl who his friends “forced him to go with.” So instead of studying all night like you planned, you are constantly worrying about whether he is cheating on you. After that one night, you decide to go with him to every social no matter how much studying you have. All the socials will start to interfere with your school. It’s just not worth it.

3. You’ll have to put up with his drunk self ALL THE TIME.

The stereotype is true; frat boys like to drink…a lot. Don’t be surprised if it’s a Monday night and he’s drunk calling you to come over to take care of him once again. There’s nothing wrong with drinking in college, but it’s annoying to have to put up with someone who constantly gets blackout drunk week after week. Plus, it puts a lot of pressure on you to drink a lot too when you’re around him and his brothers who always have a drink in their hand. Boys can be complete assholes when they’re drunk and you shouldn’t have to keep dealing with that all the time.

4. You may think you guys are exclusive, but he’s actually hooking up with 3 other girls.

Frat boys are immature and mostly afraid of having an actual relationship with someone. Most of the time, boys try to avoid the “are we exclusive” talk. Even if you guys have been hanging out all the time, he’ll still just tell you that you’re both just “having fun.” If you actually do try to bring up the idea of becoming more serious, you’ll probably be criticized and ghosted. Most frat boys just want sex with no attachments. You deserve a man instead of a boy who’s scared of commitment.

5. They could care less about school.

Not all, but most frat boys, spend more time partying instead of studying. They probably have missed tons of classes because A) they were hungover or B) they just don’t see the point of going. Frat boys will often enroll in the same class and send one boy (often a pledge) to take notes in place of the other boys. Some boys even hire some people to write their papers and do homework for them. If education is important to you, it’s probably not wise to be around someone who doesn’t really care if they graduate on time or not.

6. Dating them is like dating all of their “brothers” too.

Even if he doesn’t live in his frat house, you’ll still be around his friends all the time. Whether you like it or not, you basically have to share your boyfriend with a bunch of other guys. You may have picked the one good frat boy out of the batch, but would you really want to have to be around his obnoxious friends Brad, Chad, and Thad all the time? Don’t get me wrong everyone needs time with their friends, but especially if you live in a frat house, you guys won’t really spend any time to yourselves.

7. Being with him at socials and events has become like a job to you.

If you’re dating him, you’re expected to rep his fraternity even if you’re not the one wearing the letters. You have to go to all of the events and talk up your boyfriend’s fraternity to others. It is a real-time commitment having to accompany him to all of his events and constantly have to be socializing with others. What about your own responsibilities and activities that you are a part of? It will be really hard to balance everything you have to do with all of the events he needs you to be at.

8. If you’re in a sorority, they’ve probably hooked up with one of your sisters or at least someone you know in another sorority.

A lot of sororities do events with the same frats so it is more than likely that those guys have definitely hooked up with one of your sisters. You’ll have to go through the whole awkward ordeal of running into his past hookups. Even if you’re not in a sorority, you’ll have to go to events where you’ll see other girls he’s been with. You. deserve better.

9. Toxic Masculinity Is Real.

Frat boys are literally the definition of toxic masculinity. Frats expect males to conform to “masculine” norms. Frat brothers are always in competition with each other of who can drink the most or hookup with the most girls. The boy your dating will probably feel immense pressure to be like his other brothers and attempt to show off his masculinity. Although toxic masculinity is everywhere, frat boys really promote the idea.

10. You shouldn’t have to sit heartbroken over a skinny, white boy, with a nicotine addiction.

College is the time to grow and explore new things. I have seen way too many girls cry over some lame frat boy who did something stupid. Frat boys just aren’t ready to commit in the way you want them to. There are tons of other guys in college, without a nicotine addiction and who wear the same frat shirt for 10 days straight.

I’m not saying all frat boys are bad news…just the majority. No matter who you date just remember to not settle for less than you deserve!
