5 Reasons Why You Should Go To Therapy

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. We all have some sh** going on whether it’s a breakup or the same old family drama, it can become pretty stressful. For these reasons, and many others, it is important to seek professional help. Here are 5 reasons why you should go to therapy.

1. You’re Going Through Life Changes

Let’s talk one life change we all know too well: breakups. This is the main reason I’m seeking a therapist, amongst other reasons. I recently broke up with, let’s call him Trashbag *****. For two years I had been dealing with Trashbag up until recently when I finally called it quits with him. Sounds great right? Yeah kind of, except, a lot of things have been going on and he used to be my best friend. I would tell him anything. Now that he’s out of the picture it kind of sucks. Yeah he was garbage but in the beginning we were good friends. So I am seeking therapy to figure out how to move on from those old habits: calling him, talking to him when things get tough, etc. I’m not mourning a loss of a boyfriend, (deal with him for two years and you’ll see why), I’m figuring out new healthier habits.

Graduation is another major life change for me and a reason I should go to therapy. I hate school and always dreamed of the day it would end. Well ladies and gentlemen, that day is May 11th, 2019. You read that right, after elementary school, junior high, high school, and three colleges, my schooling will finally be over. I’m overjoyed, and yet, I’m so nervous, for 26 years my life has been nothing but school. Now that it’s going to be over I feel I should go to therapy to help me with that transition.

2. You Suspect You Might Have A Mental Issue

I suspected something was wrong years ago. I had this urge to do something harmful to myself. It was an urge that wouldn’t go away so I went to the school’s counseling center. The symptoms I was having coupled with the extreme urges I was feeling weren’t healthy and were extremely dangerous. It’s a good thing I went to seek treatment. It turns out I was right and I did have a few mental issues.

3. Your Friends and Family Can’t Be Your Only Outlet

I am 100% guilty of doing this. It’s easy to run to your family and friends instead of making the decision to go to therapy. I don’t blame you, your friends and family are free and familiar, meanwhile, therapy costs money and you have to speak with a stranger. I have been to therapy before and I’m here to tell you, yes it can be scary but it is so rewarding.

4. You’re Repressing More Than You Think

According to talkspace.com, “If you are ignoring issues and refusing to talk about them, it’ll negatively affect you in numerous ways: physically, mentally and emotionally. You might be especially irritable toward everyone in your life because you’re avoiding an underlying problem. You need to get to the roots of your difficulties to eliminate them. Therapy allows you to wrap your mind around an issue and understand it so it no longer appears to be this big, intimidating monster you can’t control.”

5. Just Wanting Someone to Talk To

Life can get lonely. Let’s say you don’t really have people around you who you can trust, if you want to talk to someone just for the hell of it then by all means! You don’t have to be insane to want to talk to someone.

What are some other reasons people should go to therapy? Let us know in the comments below.
