If you're about to enter your freshman year of college at Marist, and you survive the first semester, then you'll soon understand why spring semester is the best semester yet!

Freshman year. So beautiful, but so rough. Your first year living away from home will be the most terrifying, exciting, and overall amazing experience you will have in college! While many people focus on the first semester, the second semester in my opinion, is even better! Read below to find out 10 reasons that second semester of your freshman year of college at Marist College is the best! Enjoy!

1. You know the campus

Well, mostly. – You are no longer scrambling around, feeling lost, and more importantly, looking lost! You have found all your classes, thankfully, and know just how long it takes from your dorm to that dreaded 8am. You know where exactly the “Athlete” tables are, and you know what on earth “MU” stands for. And just like every person ever, you have walked to Dyson when your class was in Donnelly. We’ve all done it. No shame.

2. You still haven’t discovered every single in and out of Marist

Even though you might know where every one of your classes are throughout your freshman year of college, you still have a slight sense of uncertainty about the campus. You haven’t determined which seat in the library is the best, or the quirky tips and tricks that most upperclassmen have figured out, but that’s what freshman year is for! You have enough knowledge to make it, but still get to learn new things every single day!

3. You have found a group of friends

For the most part, first semester of freshman year is spent feeling out the social scene, which is perfectly normal. By now, you have more likely than not found a niche of friends who have become extremely close. You constantly talk about your day, eat meals together, and more importantly, just spend time together. These people have become your family away from home. Who knew that in just 4 short months people could become so important to you?

4. You have started to join clubs!

You have found an innate joy in playing rugby! You probably never in a million years envisioned yourself playing rugby, being on the debate team, or joining a band fraternity, but here you are! Second semester freshman you has opened up to those ideas, and as a result you are meeting amazing people and expanding your social circle! Maybe, like me, you have been inspired to start a new club, or run for an Executive Board position for a club which you are passionate about. Whatever role clubs and organizations play in your college career, make the most of it!

5. You have probably discovered which classes are hits, and which are misses.

You quickly learned which classes to avoid, and which ones are simply amazing! You have scoured “Rate My Professor” for your professors, but now, you are able to make your own judgements on those professors and classes. Psychology 101 was an amazing class, but a philosophy class for 3 hours at night? You have scoped out the best classes, and of course, tried to take the same ones as your best friends!

6. The freshman 15 is no longer as scary

Now that you have gotten to spend an entire semester eating Sodexo food, the idea of Taco Tuesday is no longer the most amazing invention ever. You have started to stray away from the dining hall, and maybe even started cooking in your dorm! Whatever the case may be, you no longer are shocked by the idea of an all you can eat buffet 24/7.

7. You got a say in your schedule!

When the school thought that an 8am chemistry lecture four days a week was a good thing, they clearly didn’t consider your sleep schedule. Now, it’s your turn! The two weeks in November when registration occurs are stressful, but getting the perfect schedule allows you to feel in control. You now have the reigns! Want all night classes? All 8ams? Want a certain time of the day free? No problem, the world of schedules is now your oyster.

8. Winter break was just too long without your best friends!

As much as you loved seeing your parents, your siblings, your dog, and your own bed, something about home is just not the same as your freshman year of college at Marist. You spent 1 entire month away from the people you just spent the last 4 months with. You don’t have someone to go on those 12am cabaret runs with, no one to stay up late and talk with, and no one who always tells you you look amazing. You have missed your incredible best friends, and the reunion could not be sweeter!

9. You’ve found your boundaries

You have experimented with alcohol. Whether or not you drank beforehand, the college drinking experience is very different. You have gone to frat parties, the 18 and up club, and if you have a fake ID, have gone to Darby’s, River, and Union. Over time, you have learned the boundaries that you should probably be setting for yourself. You have learned how important drinking water is, and how terrible the hangovers feel, if you didn’t know already.

10. You have 3 more entire years to enjoy!

Even though it’s only your freshman year of college, the time is flying! You have three short years to make an impact. 3 years to do what makes you happy, and whatever that may be, set forth and always do your best! In three years, you’ll be wearing a cap and gown on the Marist Beach. Take every moment of this semester in, you’re only a freshman in college once!
