13 Reasons Why Northern Highlands Regional High School Is The Best

Northern Highlands Regional High School was the best high school for me to attend because of the many ways it forced me to grow. I met challenges in my classes and in my activities, but would not have traded my high school experience for any other. I’m so grateful for all that I have learned here, for all of the friends I have met, and for all of the relationships I have nurtured with peers and faculty, that could not compare anywhere else. Thank you Highlands, for greatly preparing me to be my best in college and beyond. These are the reasons why Northern Highlands Regional High School is the best!!!

1. You were able to get a parking spot as a junior

Two parking lots and having multiple juniors as friends almost guaranteed that you had a spot. And there is nothing better than getting a spot when you just get your license!

2. You tell everyone that your school’s A Cappella group starred in “Pitch Slapped”

Not only were we the International Champions of High School A Cappella’s Regional Championship for the past five years, but we were also featured on a hit reality show! Lifetime’s “Pitch Slapped,” followed the lives of Highlands Voices, our school’s A Cappella group, through their singing competitions.

3. The soccer teams are regarded as the best sports teams, and every game they have is a big deal

After all, our Girls soccer was number 1 in the country.

4. The workload is a challenge, but the teachers care

Highlands has an excellent reputation of being one of the better public schools in the state for our academics, and coming to this high school showed me that they live up to that standing. “Race to Nowhere,” has since been in place to maintain a healthy balance between work and regular life, in order to gain some control over the unhealthy energy that goes into the whole college process.

5. You look forward to the cookies in the caf

Everyone who went to Highlands knows that the chocolate chip cookies were the best part of lunch. Double fisting stacks of cookies was not an odd sight to see in the caf.

6. Making it out before the buses leave is the best feeling

If you were lucky enough to have that last class close enough to the parking lot, you were almost guaranteed a smooth exit out before the buses leave, and back home before 3 o’clock. But, if you weren’t in your car by at least 2:38, you might as well shut it off and relax for a little, as you are probably going to be sitting in lines of traffic for a good 15 minutes until the buses leave.

7. You know who Patches is

Traffic was always controlled by one of the facilities workers, known as Patches. If you went to Highlands, you’d know that the reason he got his name is from that black eye patch he wears over his eye at all times.

8. Any class with Ms. Spencer is an enjoyable class

As I said before, Highlands is known for their competitive academics, however, students willingly take AP courses just for the chances of possibly getting Ms. Spencer for AP Psychology or European History. She can make a 57-minute lecture about the Franco-Prussian war sound interesting, and I can guarantee that you will be laughing about something by the end of it.

9. You will probably end up going to college with a few of your peers from high school

Everyone from Highlands tends to apply to the same cluster of schools from the northeast, and it is always evident when the wardrobe of students most days is crewnecks from Boston College, Villanova, or Lehigh. That comfort of having friends from high school with you at college will be nice sometimes, trust me.

10. 90 minute lunches were great

Days that had 90-minute lunches were always the most loved days. Classes were shortened, and food trucks from all over the area were camped outside near the parking lots. Students always raced from their last class to be the first in line, and under certain conditions, people were allowed to leave for lunch. Ordering Chinese was also always a big hit during this free time with friends!

11. The nicest vehicles were always in the parking lot

There were always at least 5 Jeep Wranglers in sight of the parking lot at all times. Not to mention BMW’s, Mercedes, and Audis.

12. You will have your group of friends by senior year, and leaving them for college will be heartbreaking

But, you can always look forward to going home on breaks to see them!

13. You will form great bonds with your teachers and truly miss them when you leave for college

The teachers at Highlands really care about you, and watch you grow all 4 years. Go back and visit them on your breaks home from school. It will make their day!
