Choosing to go to the University of Tampa was one of the hardest decisions of my life. Coming from a small town on Long Island, everyone you I know typically goes to school in Upstate NY; it was hard choosing to go to a school where I’d be 1,000 miles away from all my friends and family. But I knew this was what I wanted all my life: to leave Long Island and go to school where I knew no one; have a fresh start. When the time came, the thought of not having my best friends close by was terrifying. So here are the 5 reasons why I chose to attend UTampa and leave everything behind in New York.
When I was looking for the perfect school I knew I needed to be in, or close to, a city. I visited so many colleges and I couldn’t picture myself at a school that was an hour away from civilization. Going to UTampa meant that I was only a short walk or ride right into the city; where I could go out for food, see concerts or games at Amalie Arena, and have friends and family stay not even a mile away. Everything was just perfect, it’s far enough away from home where my parents can’t just show up and ambush me, but it’s close enough to where traveling to visit isn’t a total hassle either.
If you like to your Instagram feed looking A1, then this school is perfect for you. No matter where you go, there’s always an opportunity for good pictures. Not only the scenic views but, the school just redid the gym and it’s like going to look like Lifetime or LA Fitness, but it’s free! The campus has everything a student could want: a brand new gym, a pool great for tanning, a Starbucks right on campus, beach volleyball courts, the list could go on and on! I like that the school is categorized as a medium-sized school because it’s quite easy to get across campus and I can walk around the whole campus in about an hour, which shows that everything is so close by. All the dorms are relatively close to each other and you don’t have to wake up an hour before class to get to most of the buildings!
The Sykes College of Business is one of the main reasons why I initially chose to apply to UTampa. There’s more than ten different undergraduate programs to choose from, some including: Cybersecurity, Finance, Marketing, International Business and Economics. This business school is AACSB Accredited, for both the Undergraduate and Graduate programs. It is rapidly growing and being recognized for their fantastic programs, has hundreds of study-abroad programs, and has numerous great connections for internships or jobs with businesses and companies located right here in Tampa, FL!
I don’t wanna sound shallow or stupid, but I hate the cold… I knew I could never go to a school where I needed ten layers to keep me warm just to walk to class. Having the warmth basically all year long is something I love; but, I also like that there are months where I can throw on jeans and a sweater and walk out the door.
Here at UT we have representation from all 50 states, including Washington D.C., and we have about 1,400 international students from 140 different countries. On this campus it’s hard not to find something to get involved in. Although this school doesn’t have a football team anymore, there are 229 different clubs, organizations and teams offered here for all students to take part in. Greek life is also a growing part of UT’s community; currently we have 26 sororities and fraternities affiliated with the school. Academic wise, there are 200 academic studies offered, with almost 5,000 different classes offered on campus. The opportunities are endless on this campus and they’re growing every single year.
If you love the Florida weather and you’re looking for a medium-sized school with tons of opportunities, then the University of Tampa is the place for you! There’s so much offered here that many big universities could never offer; so don’t steer away from this school because of the size, or just because it doesn’t have a big football team.
