I’ve had my heart set on Kentucky since my brother mentioned the name “John Wall”. It helps that my grandpa is from a small town just 15 minutes out of Lexington, but no matter what, Kentucky has always felt like it was supposed to be home to me even if I’d grown up 500 miles away. Keep reading to find out the top five reasons why I chose to go to UK.
I lost my grandpa a while ago so in the process of applying to the University of Kentucky I found myself sharing a connection with him that I’d never had before. Suddenly this man that I’d known for a brief 2 years was jumping up and down in his grave cheering for me. I’m making him proud in my choice to attend UK and I’m making him proud of me.
There is nothing better than the love at first sight feeling you get when you walk on a college campus. However, I found myself sharing my “love at first sight” moment with Willie T. the library located on South Campus at the University of Kentucky. My first tour, it was the thing that sucked me in.
It’s impossible to write this and not think about Kentucky basketball, the heart of Lexington. My first exposure to the greatness that is Kentucky basketball came in 2009 when John Wall stepped on the scene, sure I’d heard about the Wildcats before then, but I hadn’t become a die-hard fan by any means at that point. Soon enough I found myself watching games here and there and before I knew it I could name every kid on the team.
I walked into a dorm on my second tour at Kentucky and was amazed to find that not only were they huge but they provided air conditioning and heat as well. If I’m going to be living in an enclosed space for the next 9 months of my life, I’m going to be sure that that space is at least tolerable to live in and the dorms in Kentucky are more than tolerable!
It seems like a weird reason to choose a school right? It’s roughly 500 miles away from my hometown and for me that was the perfect distance.
