5 Reasons Why I Chose To Go To The University of Delaware
As high-schoolers, students travel to large amounts of colleges and universities in efforts to find their new home. Through the mess of enthusiastic tour guides and overwhelming student life, it is important to take time at each location to see if you could truly see yourself there. Alike to all of my other college visits, I did this at the University of Delaware and knew right away it was the school for me. Here are the five reasons why I chose to go to Delaware.
5. Importance of Acclimation to College Life
One of the main reasons the University of Delaware stuck with me in my college decision process was the importance of acclimation to life at the University. For example, for students looking to join a Sorority on campus, they must wait until their second semester to first sign up to join. The University prides itself on allowing incoming freshman to spend their first semester getting used to the college life. They set up numerous showcases, activities, and meetings. Getting used to living without parents, and the safety nets of life at home can be really hard. The University of Delaware makes this process as easy as it can be for any incoming Freshman.
4. Distance from Home
Coming from outside of Philadelphia, a city I love, it was important to me to be able to stay close to home. From the University of Delaware, with limited traffic, the ride back to Philadelphia is about an hour. Students who do not have access to cars at this time have many options on how to travel. There are Zip Cars, Ubers, Lyfts and SEPTA. Unfortunately, the Newark train station is not open on the weekends, but there are many Delaware State Buses [DART] that give easy transportation to and from Wilmington, where the train schedules are more regular. Along with Philadelphia, the University is located at the hub of some of the biggest north-eastern cities of the US, including New York, Washington D.C. and Baltimore.
3. Real and Friendly Tour Guides
I do not know about most people, but on my other college tours, I thought that the “Rah-Rah” enthusiasm of guides gave off a fake impression of the school. Let’s be real, no one is especially excited to hear about the newly installed pedestrian walkways that they just want to scream about it to a group of strangers. At UD, a “Rah-Rah” enthusiasm is not the case, but a real enthusiasm for the school is shown. At my tour of UD, the large group of prospective students were broken down into small groups of two or three families. This way I was able to fully dive into the tour and not get lost in the back. The tour guides truly loved being at school and their love was infectious.
2. Sports ‘Optional’ Atmosphere
Unlike most schools, UD is not sports oriented. Yes, there is a huge list of games and sports one can immerse themselves in as a student at the University. But being into sports is not hugely important on campus. Personally, any sport I have encountered, I have easily found the best way to utterly fail at it. Although, I have always loved to watch. At UD, most games are free in attendance and give any group of friends a fun night activity. What makes this sports-optional approach so great, is that the University offers countless other options of activities on those days, while still throwing fun tailgates with FREE FOOD!
1 . Beautiful Campus
One of the biggest reasons I fell in love with UD, was the absolutely gorgeous campus. The colonial style halls are picture perfect 24/7. There is nothing better than walking on the Green in between campus and seeing the beauty. It creates an atmosphere that is not only awesome to look out, but almost empowering too!
