Deciding on where to go to college can be a difficult decision for many people. But with the difficulty of deciding comes the excitement of the decision! Choosing to go to University of Pittsburgh was a decision I made with great confidence and so much excitement. From the city atmosphere to the sports, I have fallen in love with both the city and the school; and these are my top 5 reasons why I chose to go to Pitt!
I grew up in Kentucky. Needless to say, there is not much to do in my state. Sure, I live in one of the larger cities, but the “big cities” in KY are considered towns elsewhere. I wanted a change, and knew that living in a city would allow me to experience a new and interesting lifestyle. I visited many city schools, but I liked Pitt the most. Oakland is a great place because it’s in Pittsburgh as well, but it’s not the heart of the city. There are tons of things to do and ways to get to other boroughs; but if you want to live the low-key college life, you still can. Everything is still fast-paced, but that just means there’s a lot to do.
I knew that, no matter what, I wanted to do something in the STEM field. Pitt excels at providing any and everything students need to succeed in STEM. I had the opportunity to research, volunteer, shadow physicians, and talk with professionals about prospective career paths. Pittsburgh is turning into the Silicon Valley of the East, and I wanted to take advantage of that.
When I was little, I would take trips with my family to Pittsburgh. Both of my parents, aunts, uncles, and many of my cousins went to Pitt. Not one of them had a bad thing to say about their time there. Their memories and comments about the school made me want to go there and now I see what they were talking about. I’m glad I did. Although I wasn’t 100% in love with Pitt at first, it grew on me and I began to understand why they loved it so much.
This is a really BAD reason to choose a school, BUT it had its perks. I am a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, and I knew that going to Pitt would mean I could take a bus over to the North Side and see my favorite teams play. I saw a Pirates game during my first week there, a Steelers game on my birthday, and I’m hoping to see a Pens game this coming year (though that might be hard after their recent Stanley Cup win). Plus, the Pitt Panthers PLAY AT HEINZ FIELD!! I won a contest last year and had the opportunity to watch a game from club box seats. 10/10 would recommend.
We beat Yale in a poll. Just saying. That makes Pitt preeeetttty awesome.
