5 Reasons Why I Chose to Go To Johnson and Wales University Denver

Choosing a school after attending a community college can be difficult but luckily Johnson and Wales University fit all of my requirements. Transferring to JWU was one of the best and most rewarding decisions of my life. Keep reading to find out my top 5 reasons for why I chose to go to Johnson and Wales University Denver and trust me, it wasn’t easy narrowing down to just 5!

1. Culinary Excellence

Johnson and Wales is well-known as one of the best culinary schools in the country but they’re one of the only schools that has a culinary curriculum tied to a nutrition program! Before I changed my major, I wanted to be a dietitian. I loved the idea of being able to pursue my passion for healthy eating while also learning how to create delicious food. Even after I decided to switch my major to Beverage Operations and Retail Management, I was still able to take really awesome classes like Beverage Appreciation!

2. It looks like Hogwarts!

Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood and is honestly still a huge part of my college life (Fantastic Beasts anyone?). So when I saw pictures of the JWU campus online I thought it looked beautiful but it was nothing compared to seeing it in person. If you saw the campus, why wouldn’t you want to go to Johnson and Wales University Denver? All of the buildings are gorgeous to look at but Centennial Hall is my absolute favorite. The moment I saw it I really felt like I was going to an actual college instead of shuttling around universities that felt more like office buildings. I may not have gotten my Hogwarts letter at 11 years old but this more than makes up for it.

3. Bright Lights, City Life

I’m a city girl through and through. I grew up in San Diego my whole life so I wanted to attend a school that still had that city vibe. Johnson and Wales is really close to downtown Denver by either car, public transportation, or a Lyft/Uber. I love being able to easily get to all the awesome events, museums, and nightlife nearby. Getting to experience a new city was really exciting and it’s been fun going around and exploring Denver. Having the campus so conveniently located was a huge plus for me!

4. Size Matters

At first I didn’t know how I would feel about going to a small campus university. I thought it would be too small and I would feel like I was just running into the same people over and over again. Yet I found out this doesn’t happen as often as people think it does. I’ve been going to JWU for almost two years now and there are still students I haven’t met! Plus having small class sizes is so nice when I want to connect with a professor and get their advice. One of the best things about going to a small school is the fact that classrooms are only a short walk away from the dorm room. I had a 7:30 am class last year and being able to sleep in until the very last minute before heading to class really helped.

5. Real life experience!

One of the main reasons a lot of people go to college is to be able to find a job afterward. For a lot of their academic programs, JWU requires students to go on an internship for their major. I liked this idea of getting the chance to get some real world experience in my industry before graduating. It’s a great networking opportunity and it provides lifelong connections to people who could give me recommendations later on. A lot of the professors at Johnson and Wales have worked in their respective industry for years or are even still working in their industries. They bring their stories and advice into the classroom and I’ve gotten so inspired by one of my professors that now I’m even considering getting a minor in marketing! If you want hands on experience, go to Johnson and Wales University Denver!

I’m so glad that I decided to go to Johnson and Wales University Denver and I can’t wait to see what the rest of my time here has in store! Comment below some of your top reasons for choosing your school!
