Long distance relationships are really s*****. Ask a couple who are in one if they are happy; I guarantee you they’ll say no. If you are just fine with being away from the person you love, then a long distance relationship is for you. If you’re like me and the rest of the sane world you know that being in a long distance relationship sucks and here are 5 reasons why.
I remember when my ex and I were together. I was away at college and he stayed home. We promised each other we would talk every single day. At first it was nice, after a while it started to become a pain in the a**. Of course I loved talking to him don’t get me wrong, it was the fact that we were both so busy. With mounting schoolwork and changing work schedules it became so hard to keep in contact. We would both feel guilty and try to make up for it. So communication came in cycles for us. We would barely talk, feel bad about it, talk nonstop, and then would go back to barely talking again.
Listen, I’m going to be real with you, sex is awesome! If you enjoy it as much as me then you’ll understand how grueling it is to go with out it. I mean there are other ways to make up for it: phone sex, sexting, and FaceTime. These alternatives do help, but you have to admit, there is nothing like having sex with another human being.
The majority of my relationship was long distance and it sucked so hard. I was about 7 hours away from my boyfriend at the time. There were nights where I would cry like a baby because I missed him so much. Going without sex is one thing, but there’s nothing like the sadness of missing them. I didn’t even care about the sex at that point, I just wanted to be with him. A person’s presence really has an effect on you. When you’ve grown an attachment to someone it’s painful to be away from them.
To get from my school back to my house, it took 11 hours and two bus rides. Well it also took an additional 30 minute train ride and another bus ride if I didn’t want to spring for an Uber from the bus station. What I’m saying is, traveling to see your partner can get expensive and it’s incredibly time consuming. It’s also draining, so much so that after a while you don’t want to do it anymore. In order for me to come back home to see my boyfriend at the time, I had to request time off work, pay for the tickets, and make sure all my assignments were in order before I left, every single time. Listen, my aunt lived an hour and a half away (3 hours on the only bus to her city and another 45 minutes on another bus and train) and because of the travel time and requesting time off from work, it was easier to just stay on campus. So if an hour and a half away was too much, imagine 7 hours away.
With everything going on it’s understandable why you would feel jealous. I definitely was jealous when I wanted to talk and he wanted to go spend time with his friends. It’s important to have a conversation with each other when one of you starts feeling this way. Communication is key, especially in a long distance relationship.
