I come from a small town that barely exists on a map, so to say that I am excited to attend UW-Madison this fall is an understatement. While it is no New York University, it does, however, have some amazing things that propel me towards the school. Here are the top 5 reasons I am dying to start UW-Madison.
Anyone who has been to Madison knows about the farmer’s market. Not only do they have organic/wild honey but they have cheese curds in all the flavors under the sun. From bacon to jalapeno, to garlic and so much more. You will leave with your stomach full of samples and bags of unique cheese curd flavors. Farmers markets are also a good way to support local businesses and buy items that have clean ingredients. My small town has a makeshift farmers market, but nothing as big as the one in Madison. It’s really the place to let your inner hipster shine.
There comes a time in every student’s life when they have to get involved. The best way to do this is by joining a club. UW-Madison has over a 100 different clubs and student organizations. This means that you are bound to find a group that you mesh with. As the odd one out in my small town, finding people who are just like me and share similar interests is something that is a next to impossible. At UW-Madison I (and you) can meet people who don’t judge and share in our weirdness, while enjoying the same things because Madison is big enough to be different.
If you grew up with the same group of people and attended middle and high school with them, you know how difficult it is to reinvent yourself. By reinvent, I don’t mean turning yourself into a fake Barbie, rather, I mean experimenting with who you are and what you like to do. As a shy person, it was difficult for me to reinvent myself in high school because with change comes attention, and I am not about that life. Starting at a new school like UW-Madison will allow me the opportunity to switch up my look and actually set and meet goals I was unable to attain in high school.
I know other colleges offer travel opportunities, but I believe that UW-Madison offers some of the best opportunities. I want to eventually travel the world; and I know it’s a cliche dream, but going to Madison and having the opportunity to go to places like China, Japan, and Rio are just about as exciting as it gets for me. Madison offers students the opportunity to study abroad and travel to other countries at low rates or for free if you are lucky.
Everyone I have asked about their college experience has all told me that college was where they found themselves. I believe that Madison is the best place to get to know who you are. It is big enough to get lost in, but small enough to find yourself. You are all alone, away from home, there are fewer rules, you are constantly surrounded by new people, and everything is different. You are forced to get out of your comfort zone and sometimes it can scare you a little. I am excited to find myself at UW-Madison, and I hope you are too, because I am not sure if I truly know who I am yet.
