5 Reasons I Chose To Go To SJU
Everyone has their reasons for choosing the college they chose. Some dreamed of it their whole life; others had a sudden change in what they wanted and chose a whole new direction. Others, like myself, sort of fell into a school. I had dreamed of attending Stanford (I didn’t know how to think realistically at the time) and when my early admissions application was rejected, I had no idea what to do. But then, not three days later, I received an email from St. John’s University in Queens! Keep reading for 5 reasons I chose to go to SJU.
1. SJU has a free application.
I’m sure I’m not the only St. John’s student who only applied because they got an email offering a free application with no essay required. In the slew of $50+ applications fees and at least one long essay per application, this seemed too good to be true, and I jumped on the opportunity. Then, a few months later, I received my acceptance letter in the mail, and my journey began.
2. I wanted to study in a land far, far away…
It’s no secret that when it comes to leaving home for school, sometimes it’s a choice between somewhere that feels too close, or somewhere that is way out of your comfort zone, and for me St. John’s was leaving my comfort zone way behind as an 18-year-old from Texas, for me, that was part of the appeal. I wanted to get out of the environment I knew, and experience something completely different.
3. SJU has a great reputation.
Everything I heard about St. John’s had been good; excellent academic reputation, on campus job opportunities, access to resources like internships, and included amenities for resident students. It may not be perfect, but it’s not too bad of a place to live and receive an education.
4. Diversity and all of the benefits it comes with.
A very large deciding factor for me was when I looked online and found out how diverse St. John’s is as a campus. Students come from all over the world it seems to study here, and the effect of being surrounded by so many cultures can only make SJU even better in my opinion.
5. Through SJU, I can study in a land even farther away.
The last deciding factor for me was how readily you could study abroad at St. John’s. I’ve always wanted to study abroad, so it was one of the biggest reasons I chose to go to SJU. With at least three different options of how or where you want to study, I was immediately planning when and how I was going to make this happen. As a result I was able to start Italian in my first year to work towards studying abroad in my junior year!
