5 Reasons Why I Chose To Go To UMD

From the beautiful views of Lake Superior to a variety of academic opportunities, we’ve got you covered for all the reasons to choose UMD!

1. Boredom? What’s That?

The fun starts with freshman outdoor trips for new students and it literally never ends. The University of Minnesota Duluth as a huge variety of events that range from athletics to fine arts. They have plenty of clubs, student organizations and intramural sports and if you still can’t find anything that piques your interest (which would be extremely unlikely) you can create your own club or intramural team with a few friends!

2.  The Size Matters

In my opinion, UMD is THE perfect size. With an undergraduate degree-seeking student enrollment of around 9,000 in 2016, it allows you to accomplish the “big university connections” while feeling a sense of small community.

3.  So Many Options

For someone like me, variety is important especially now that I’m starting a new chapter of my life. I wanted to have as many options as possible but at the same time I didn’t want to go to a huge university where I would literally become another number for their stats so when I realized that UMD was a medium size school offering 86 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in 27 different fields. It was a delightful moment!

4.  Cozy Mole Life

Minnesota is freezing.

Ok, that’s an understatement. Minnesota is the land of glacial winds where if you take a breath of air during the winter your nose might get frozen shut.

so when I decided I wanted to move out but not pay extra tuition at another state I realized I would have to stay north and omg was that a bummer.

Don’t take me wrong. I love Minnesota!… From June to October.

The moment I realized that I knew I needed to find a school where I could easily ignore the winter temperatures and that’s where UMD hit the jackpot for me.

UMD has tunnels and skyways that connect almost every building on campus, so for someone like me, who is going to live in the dorms, there’s no need to go outside at all. I could literally go to class in pajamas!

5.  The Almighty Lake Superior

There’s a reason they call it superior. Not only is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America, it also contains 10% of all the Earth’s fresh surface water!

If that isn’t cool, I don’t know what it is.

Yeah, a lake isn’t the best reason for someone to choose a specific school, but I have to be honest and admit the fact that this beautiful lake is one of the main reasons I chose UMD. I always wanted to live near the ocean but due to economic problems, I realized that dream was not coming soon to reality so what’s the next big body of water near my radar? Lake Superior!
