If you’re recently single I urge you not to stress! Some people find it difficult to adjust to being alone, of course it won’t be easy at first. Every song on the radio will remind you of your ex. You’ll lie in bed at night feeling lonely because you’ve got nobody to spoon. You will feel like you’ve lost a part of you, but you should never feel incomplete because you’re alone. In fact you’re probably more in touch with who you are as a person and you will be mentally stronger because you’re independent. We have all gone through a break up and thought we would never get over it, then a couple of months later you’re like Jay who? Sometimes it’s important to be single for a while for your mental state. Once you get over the initial shock of the split you will start to learn that you can be happy alone and there’s no better feeling in the world. Here are eight reasons why being single is important for your mental health.
At first it does feel strange being alone, especially when you’re so used to sharing everything with another person. Now think about that statement for a moment. When you’re in a relationship you’re basically agreeing to share almost everything together. You share food, living expenses and experiences together. When you’re on your own you don’t have to worry about what your partner wants or needs, you can be selfish. Being selfish is good for you, you should always do what makes you happy, rather than spend your life trying to make another person happy. So many people are guilty of getting into a relationship and forgetting to think about themselves. It’s important to look after number one, learning to make yourself happy is something you will learn from being single. This is why it’s important to be single for a while.
When you’re single you don’t have to seek the opinion of your partner. When you’re in a relationship you have to compromise. He might want to go Skiing in The Alps, whilst you might want to go and chill out in the Caribbean. If you’re single you don’t have to worry about coming to an agreement, you can go anywhere you like. If you want to go and travel the world or move to a new city you have the opportunity, there is nothing keeping you grounded. This is the beauty of being single, you can live your life without having to seek permission from another person.
Being single isn’t bad at all, you’ll probably find that you receive more attention. If you’ve been in a long term relationship it’s most likely that your partner has stopped with the cheesy chat up lines and romantic gestures. When you’re single you have guys trying to woo you, they’ve not got you yet so they have to make you smile. It’s nice to be complimented and you will find that it’s during your single days that you grow in confidence.
Sometimes when people get into a relationship they begin to neglect their friends. This is probably not the intension, but quite often they become so besotted with their new partner that they have no time for you. When a couple are joined at the hip they will attend social events together, very rarely without each other. They lose the one on one friendships they once had and become the type of people who socialise solely to show face. You know the type, you see them once a month but used to see them every day. It’s not such a bad thing, but you definitely have closer friendships when you are single. You have more time for your friends and share more with them, which obviously brings you closer together.
It can be difficult when you are in a relationship and you are struggling with insecurities. For example when there’s a lack of trust. This can cause all kinds of aggravation from anxiety, to stress which then leads to arguments. All of this is so unhealthy. When you are single you don’t have to worry about someone hurting you. You can go to bed at night knowing nobody is cheating on you. If you are in a relationship and you feel insecure I suggest you leave, you will be happier single.
When you’re single this doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a life of loneliness. You can go out and date people, think of it as an exciting adventure rather than a desperate search for the one. You cannot force a relationship and if you’re single and still haven’t met the right one who cares? Just enjoy dating until Mr Right comes along.
You don’t have to worry about what you’re going to watch on T.V. If you want to watch a full season of Gossip Girl then you can. There is no more compromising, so why is being single all that bad? You also don’t have to worry about how you look to them, or what they think of you. In fact you don’t have to care what anybody thinks. You can get drunk at family parties and not have to worry about embarrassing your partner. When you’re single you couldn’t give a fu.ck.
It can be difficult going through a break-up. Especially if it’s the first time you’ve had your heart broken, but trust me you will grow from it. Although it may be upsetting for a while, you will get over it eventually. You will become a stronger, more independent individual and when you have discovered yourself you will find somebody who is more suited to you. If you have broken up with a partner it’s probably because they weren’t right for you, but it will always be difficult to know who is right for you’re unsure of who you are. Be single for a while, be self-indulgent, and get to know your passions and ambitions.
