Every college student pretty much lives on snacks. Sometimes lunch is literally just a snack! Unfortunately, most college dorms don’t have stoves or ovens, so you can’t make the most extravagant snacks. However, a lot of dorms do have microwaves luckily. To be honest, the average college student would probably die without a microwave. They are a god sent. Thanks technology! Microwaves make snack time way easier and a lot quicker! You can save time, and money, with these quick snacks that you can make in your dorm room microwave:
Quesadilla’s are so easy to make in the microwave. You don’t need a fancy quesadilla press, although those are pretty nice. Seriously, you only need 3 things: soft tortilla shells, cheese (sliced or shredded), and your microwave. Just slap one tortilla on a plate, liberally apply cheese to said tortilla, then slap another tortilla shell on top. Slide that puppy into the microwave for a minute, go to bathroom because we all try to do things while the microwave is going, then enjoy when that beeper goes off! If you would like a more detailed recipe, which I don’t know how more detailed you could get, check one out here. Also, if you have some salsa laying around, you can dip your quesadilla in it for more fun, even ranch, too!
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but honestly plain apples can get a little boring after awhile and might make you want to risk just going to the doctors. Apples make great healthy snacks, but sometimes they just don’t do much for you by themselves. If you want to literally spice up your apples during snack time, make some warm cinnamon apples! All you have to do is cut an apple up (be careful!), put the slices in a bowl, bury them in cinnamon and sugar because that’s the best part, and stick them in the microwave, covered, for about a minute. The apples will come out soft and yummy. For a more precise recipe check this one out.
You might not want to make s’mores one of your go-to snacks, but they are a fun little quick snack just to have every once and while. Unfortunately, you can’t have campfires in your dorm rooms, but you do of course have that lovely microwave. Microwaved s’mores definitely are not as good as s’mores you make over the fire, but in college you just work with what you got. All you need to do is put the s’more together like you would a traditional one, just with a normal marshmallow, not cooked. You’ll then stick the whole thing in the microwave and microwave it for maybe 10 seconds. You really need to watch it because the marshmallow really like to get big and scary, please do not get intimidated by it! You’ll have an ooey-gooey s’more in seconds!
Scrambled eggs are great for breakfast, but they can also be a great snack! Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a skillet and stove top to make scrambled eggs, you can make them in the microwave! I am not too immersed in the egg microwaving world, so I suggest checking out this recipe. College students needs all the protein they can get, which eggs offer a ton! Scrambled eggs are definitely one of the more healthier snacks a college student can easily make.
Some people may find pepperoni in general to be a little questionable, but it’s seriously a great snack just by itself. However, I know a little trick that’ll make that pepperoni even better. If you lay a napkin or a paper towel on a microwave safe plate, place as many little pepperoni slices on it as you want, then pop it in the microwave for a minute you will hit the holy grail. These pepperoni chips are seriously amazing. Also, all the grease gets soaked up in the paper towel so you won’t be consuming so much! That even makes it a tiny bit healthier! These are a great snack and an amazing alternative to the lame vending machine snacks in your dorm hall.
If you haven’t thought about making a baked potato in your dorm room microwave for a snack have you even been in college? You don’t need an oven! Don’t be afraid to bake a freaking potato in a microwave. I get that it does seem a little scary because we are so used to them cooking in an oven, but it’s seriously not scary at all when you have a whole baked potato in 5 minutes. You could even have it as a meal! You just need to grab yourself a potato, poke your fork in it a few times, and microwave it for 5 minutes! It’s that easy! Then you can of course flavor it to your liking with some butter, salt, and pepper.
Making things in a mug was a huge trend a few years ago, if you recall. It was a cute trend, but also really helpful for people who seriously don’t have time to cook. If you are looking for a sweet snack, making a cake in a mug is perfect. It may be a little more time consuming than the previous snacks mentioned, but worth it nonetheless. It’s still better than eating boring potato chips as a snack! There are tons of recipes for cake in a mug, but if you want an easy one, check this one out here. You may need to go out and buy some of the ingredients because there usually isn’t flour and baking soda sitting around a dorm room. If you do decided to purchase the items, keep in mind you can make the cake in a mug multiple times now for a snack because you’ll have all the ingredients!
It’s seriously easy to make your own queso in the microwave. All you really need to do is stick a whole bunch of cheese in a bowl with some milk and let it melt in the microwave. There isn’t much to it! There are definitely way better ways to make microwave queso, but like I said college students have to work with what they got! Don’t forget to buy tortilla chips! You could also just go to Moe’s free queso day.
I know what you’re thinking, “How am I supposed to make taquitos?” You really aren’t. I’m just mentioning them because they are the snack of all snacks. You can purchase a box of them from any store that has frozen food items. You can easily pop a few in a microwave and have them as a snack in the dorm room or even on the go! My roommates and I ate these a lot, so I just feel like they deserve to be mentioned. Taquitos are something you should very highly consider purchasing for a microwavable snack.
The best was saved for last. Microwaved nachos! They aren’t as amazing as nachos you order at a sports game or restaurant, but they’re still a game changer when it comes to the snacking world. Place some tortilla chips of your choice on a plate, sprinkle some shredded cheese, or whatever form of cheese you have, all over the top, and then pop it in the microwave until the cheese is melted to your liking. That alone is great, but if you want a little something more pour some hot sauce on the chips! If you just so happen to have salsa, jalapenos, and/or sour cream, add those too! You can make them as simple or as complex as you want!
In college you don’t always have the time to make snacks in the microwave. You just grab a granola bar and head out. However, if you do have the time hopefully these snacks inspired you to take advantage of that microwave in your dorm room. They’re easy!
