10 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Moving In With Someone

When you are approaching your sophomore year, you are most likely struggling to find roommates! Everyone is so over living in the dorms and living in such a confined area. Here are 10 questions to ask yourself when moving in with someone new:

1. How Long Have You Known Them?

If you are an in-state student, maybe you went to high school with these girls and you know their habits and personalities really well! You also could be an out-of-state student with a lot of friends from home at college with you! If neither of these apply to you, evaluate how well you know these friends and what you know about them such as their sleeping schedules, study habits, and more!

2. How Clean Are They?

Yes, you may not be living in the same room as your roommates, but you are still sharing a living room and kitchen with these people! Make sure you have the same living habits as the friends you decide to live with or you might have a rude awakening. If you always keep your room clean, you might want to make sure your friends do the same. If you did not live in dorms and do not consider yourself a clean freak, you might be surprised at how things change when your roommates do not have the same living habits as you.

3. Do Your Friends Get Along?

Your ideal living situation might not be your best friend’s ideal living situation. Don’t be surprised if the people you want to live with don’t want to live together. When it comes to living with people, your friends won’t always want to live together. Many of your friends might have polar opposite personalities from each other and you might not even realize it! Make sure you have a firm discussion with all of your potential roommates and make sure everyone is okay with living with each other so you aren’t caught in an unlucky situation.

4. Do Your Roommates Live In-State Or Out-Of-State?

It’s important to make sure your living plans are set before you stop looking for roommates. If your friends live in-state, they may be inclined to live at home. You do not want to get stranded especially if you cannot afford a one person apartment! Make sure you have a talk with all your friends and make sure they are set on living in an apartment not just exploring options.

5. Have You Ever Fought With Your Future Roommates?

Analyze any fights or confrontations you have had with your future roommates. How were they handled? Were things the same after? Can you see yourself fighting with them in the future? The last thing you want for yourself is to end up hating one of your best friends. If you believe your personalities just do not match up for living together then make sure you put your friendship first. Living together should be an exciting thing, not something that adds stress to your life.

6. How Motivated Are They?

There is nothing wrong with having a little fun on the weekends, but if the people you are living with never focus on school, you might be inclined to follow in their footsteps. Make sure the people that you live with are as motivated as you are! If they are constantly skipping class and not doing their work, they might not be the best person to live with! Common interests are very important when considering who to live with.

7. How Much Can You Afford?

Money is definitely a topic you need to discuss with your future roommates. Not everyone can afford the same apartments or houses and it is definitely a difficult subject to address Do not make your friends feel bad for what they can and cannot afford! Not everyone can afford to live alone and not everyone has the privilege of having their parents pay for their apartment.

8. How Many Roommates Is Too Many?

If you can afford to have fewer roommates, it is definitely something to consider. The more people, especially girls, you have in a small space together, the more drama there can be. Consider the number of people you want to live with as you might have to accommodate their needs and living habits! This is very important when you only know a couple of your roommates as well! You might be living with your best friend, but then she has her best friend and her best friend has their best friend.

9. Do They Have A Significant Other?

One thing to consider when picking your roommate is if they have a significant other. This may not matter to you, but it may get annoying to have guests at your apartment all the time. Especially if they are obnoxious or noisy together.

10. Does It Feel Right?

When picking roommates or apartments make sure you have a good feeling about things. If you have a gut feeling all will go wrong, make sure you have other options! Choosing your housing for the next year should be fun and exciting, not stressful and upsetting!
