Quarantine has been a time of creating a “new normal” and attempting to find some sanity in the world. At the beginning of quarantine in March, people started to come up with some weird trends that looking back on now are so odd, like buying 300 rolls of toilet paper. As the pandemic still continues to persist, everyone is still trying to adjust and make the best out of the situation we are in. Here are some strange quarantine trends that we’ll probably laugh about 20 years from now.
Do you remember in early March when you would see 20 people challenging each other through Instagram Stories to draw an orange or a carrot? I guess it was to keep people entertained when they had been told not to leave their house. People were crazy about doing any Instagram story challenge in general. I remember seeing so many Bingo lists, “What emojis describe you”, and “this or that.” It was fun while it lasted but it kind of was a throwback to 2011 when everyone would post the “Like for a TBH.”
Did Carol Baskin kill her husband? The world will never know. I never took part in the “Tiger King” obsession, but I certainly saw all the Carol Baskin memes and Tik Toks. The show intrigued people as it was a documentary that investigated the lives of exotic animals and roadside zoos and it involved a lot of scandal, murder, and mystery. Of course, people would be drawn to it since the biggest newsworthy event of their day was deciding whether they should go on a neighborhood walk or watch another episode of a Netflix show.
Basically, it involved taking a pillow and wrapping it on you with a belt. Stylish, am I right? Almost every celebrity posted themselves on Instagram in a pillow dress so therefore people had to try this trend. I’m not sure who came up with the idea that a pillow could be a dress, but they do say to value comfort over style and pillow dresses combine both together. Since people couldn’t leave their houses it was their way of getting dressed up.
One trend that stemmed from TikTok was the ghost photoshoot. You take a sheet put it over you with a pair of sunglasses and then go out and have a fun photo shoot. It is almost spooky season, so why not? It is pretty fun though when people take high-quality pictures of them with a sheet and sunglasses on. It’s a great trend that I hope never dies out.
All of a sudden one day in April I opened Instagram and my whole feed was filled with pictures with the caption “Until Tomorrow.” This was a trend where people would post a super embarrassing picture of themselves and then if someone else liked it, they had to also post a picture with the tag “Until Tomorrow.” This was the level of boredom that people were experiencing.
Dying your hair at home is already risky, but only choosing to dye the front strands? It sounds a little odd. Some people can pull it off, but for the most part, it doesn’t make sense as to why people only want to dye just the front strands of their hair? It’s supposed to be the “e-girl” style but I really wonder who came up with this trend.
It all started on Tik-Tok when people found out that if you bit the Martinelli’s Apple Juice container it would make a sound like you were eating an apple. Everyone was shocked and kept buying whole packages of the apple juice just to see if the rumors were true. Apparently, the container does make a noise like biting into an apple, but is it really worth spending money on when you can just buy normal apple juice?
At the beginning of quarantine, people stocked up on 1000s of rolls of toilet paper and paper towels even though they weren’t going to run out. So what does one do with several hundred rolls of toilet paper? The solution: make a giant wall of toilet paper and have your dogs or cats jump over it. It’s cute and it will definitely go viral as your dog knocks them over and then your whole living room is filled with toilet paper rolls.
All you do is make mini pancakes and then put them in a bowl and then you have pancake cereal! My only question is how do they get the pancakes so small because it’s really hard to control the size of the pancakes. It is a strange food idea, but pancakes are good so I 100% support this trend. Plus it looks amazing in every picture!
A beginning of quarantine Tik-Tok trend was when people would ask their friends to take something strange out of their fridge. Some examples would be a cat, a curling iron, a pillow, or other random objects. These videos were pretty funny to watch at first, but after a while, I did get tired of seeing another person pull their animal out of the fridge. It got less and less funny as time went on which is probably why the trend only lasted for a couple months.
Most of the viral quarantine trends all came from Tik-Tok including all the dances, challenges, and food ideas. Tik-Tok has taken over the Internet during quarantine and is definitely controlling what’s trending to what’s not. Although it is challenging times with the pandemic, it’s still possible to have some fun with viral trends and challenges like the ones listed above!
