I’ve been on the Jenny Han train since I first laid eyes on her book series The Summer I Turned Pretty. And then, when To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before came out I read that too. I fell in love with Lara Jean and Peter and I’m glad the rest of the world is finally on board. Since the Netflix adaptation of the book came out a couple of weeks ago, their love story and love for the character of Peter, has taken the world by storm.
Now, Noah Centineo’s good looks and flawless portrayal definitely helped with that, but I attribute a lot of his success to Jenny Han and screenwriter Sofia Alvarez’s ability to create a rounded, respectable and lovable male character. I mean, it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with him. His character has prompted laments from fans on Twitter saying they’ll never find a guy that measures up to him. Yes girls, it may be a hefty task, Peter Kavinsky is quite the man, but I’m here to help. Here are five qualities Peter has that you should be looking for in any potential dream guy.
One of the first things I noticed about Peter is how generous he is. From the very beginning of the movie, he shows concern for Lara Jean’s well-being and for those around her. For example, when they first meet up at the Corner Cafe when Lara Jean is avoiding talking to Josh, he offers to drive her home with her bike. He continues to be thoughtful and generous like this throughout the movie. And let’s not forget he went all the way across town to get her her favorite Korean yogurt smoothies! Get you a guy as generous as Peter Kavinsky.
There’s nothing more attractive than a guy who can take a joke and deal them out too. Peter teases Lara Jean in a way that’s fun and flirty and never annoying or douchey which is a skill many guys around his age have yet to perfect. And, he never takes himself too seriously. It’s rare, but if you find a guy who can laugh at himself as well don’t let that one go.
Joking around and having a sense of humor is only half the game, you need a guy like Peter who knows how to be serious when necessary. Peter isn’t afraid to be vulnerable with Lara Jean and that’s part of the reason why their connection is so strong. You can see evidence of this when Peter and Lara Jean talk about Peter’s father leaving or the loss of her mother. They confide in each other, which is so important when it comes to having a partner.
Peter may scoff at Sixteen Candles at first, but when it comes down to it, he really gives the movie a chance and watches it with curiosity and intent. He also shows an interest in Lara Jean’s clothes and comments multiple times on her great fashion sense, something that’s clearly important to her. If he can’t even bring himself to compliment your outfits or pay attention during your favorite movie is he really worth it?
There’s nothing worse than a guy who plays games, and while Peter uses the whole “fake-dating” ploy to get his foot in the door with Lara Jean, he’s not afraid to tell her exactly how he feels when he needs to. He does everything he can to show Lara Jean that he actually cares about her and, in this case, the typical boy/girl roles are kind of reversed. Lara Jean is so oblivious to the fact that he likes her that he literally has to tell her she’s being dense. We should all strive to be as transparent as Peter in matters of the heart.
Now go out and find yourself a Peter! Or someone with at least a couple of his great qualities.
