Why I’m Proud To Be A First Generation Student

Being a first generation student can be a lot of weight on your shoulders. The pressure of doing good, being an example to those younger than you and living up to expectations. You are the one taking a lead and going down a path others in your family haven’t.

I am the youngest of three and the only girl; there’s already enough pressure. During my elementary and middle school years, I did an amazing job in school. Once I got to high school, things became harder. Balancing a social life, family and an insane amount of work became a lot to handle. I did make it through four years of high school without staying back but there was a lot of summer school. My transcript and GPA was nowhere near what I wanted it to look like by the time I graduated.

By some miracle, I got accepted to my dream school. I knew this was my chance to turn it around. My GPA and transcript are nothing like they were before, I’ve taken a hold of my academic life and turned it into something I am proud of.

Being the first of my family to go to college can be stressful. I am extremely proud of where I have gotten and am looking forward to the future and I am an example for my niece, nephew, and little cousins.  They can learn even though I did stumble and have a few rough moments, I kept going and I got to where I am now by working hard. I really am a role model.
