Postponed Movie Releases We’re Most Upset About

With the Covid-19 quarantine in full effect, we’ve lost many venues where people gather in large groups. None of these losses has affected me more than that of movie theaters. And while this is happening through March and April so far, a time that isn’t necessarily synonymous with noteworthy movie releases, there are still a couple of promising titles that have been pushed back.

And in hopes of keeping up awareness for these films so that people will hopefully go see them when the world returns to normal, we are going to take a look at a couple postponed 2020 movie releases that you should be upset about.

A Quiet Place Part II

A Quiet Place Part II was one of the movie releases that was slated to come out the weekend the quarantine went into full effect here in Tampa, meaning we missed the March 20th release, and we now have to wait until September 4th.

If you saw A Quiet Place, then you know there are many things that makes it an anomaly. First, it being a PG-13 horror movie is a rarity in itself, and then, of course, there is the whole premise of the movie, which is that it has next to no dialogue, and a lot of sign language is used. And the thing that really hit it all home is that A Quiet Place Crushed at the box office, which leads me to my next point.

Martin Scorsese was once asked if he preferred Godfather 1, or Godfather 2, and his answer was simple, it was Godfather 2 because Francis Coppola had more money to make it, and truly fulfill his vision. And while it is a stereotype that sequels are typically worse, I think A Quiet Place Part II will not fall into that category. The fact that it made so much money the first time around, I think Part II will deliver everything we could want, more action, more dramatic set pieces, more aliens, and of course, the addition of Cillian Murphy to the cast.

First Cow

This is one of the more interesting postponed movie releases due to the fact that it was initially released on March 6th before the world shut down. Still, due to dwindling audiences, the distribution company has decided that they will re-release the movie later in the year. This may prove to be a smart move if ticket sales happen to surge when people are finally able to leave their homes again.

The first Cow appears to be a new kind of western that focuses less on gun slinging and more on the society of that time. The movie follows two travelers who have dreams of becoming rich and their attempts to do that through using stolen milk from a landowner’s prized dairy cow. From the trailer alone, this movie appears to have a ton of heart, and it will be one of the first movie releases I’m looking forward to on the other end of this pandemic.

The French Dispatch

The French Dispatch is 100% in my list of top 3 three movie releases that have been postponed. Anyone who has ever seen a Wes Anderson movie knows that when he has a release that hits theaters, it is a must-see. The French Dispatch is Wes Anderson’s first live-action movie since The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014, and his stop motion masterpiece, Isle Of Dogs, came in between in 2018.

The French Dispatch was pushed from a July release back to October. The French Dispatch follows in the footsteps of all of Wes Anderson’s movies. It contains an ensemble cast with returning regulars such as Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Adrian Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Saoirse Ronan, and then goes even farther by adding talents such as Timothée Chalamet and Benicio del Toro.

The French Dispatch tells the story of a European newspaper that is commemorating the decade with a special edition paper that highlights the three best stories from those years. Through what I’m guessing will be a series of flashbacks, we will see the tales of a kidnapping plot that is resolved by a chef, an artist who’s living his life in prison, and student revolutionary riots.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for this movie yet, I suggest you go and do that right away. I’ve probably watched it 50 times since it’s dropped, and while that has made it hard for me not to lose my mind due to waiting until October, it has certainly got the hype going, and The French Dispatch is for sure going to be one of my favorite movie releases of 2020.

Free Guy

Free Guy just looks like a ton of fun, and it basically appears as if GTA V Online was turned into a live-action movie. The original release date for this movie was July 3rd, but it has been pushed back to December 11th.

Free guy is the latest installment of Ryan Reynolds acting like Deadpool in every movie he’s in, and I’m not not a fan. The premise of Free Guy is that an online video game NPC realizes he can act freely and that he doesn’t have to go through his daily routine of getting robbed while working as a bank teller. Through this realization, he is able to start interacting with players, and after finding out that Video Game is going offline, he has to fight to save the game and his own life.

This list of postponed movie releases is by no means a complete list of all the films that were affected by this shutdown. And hopefully, sooner than later, movie theaters will be opening back up that way the film industry can get back on track. In the meantime, all we can do as consumers is pay attention to movies we’re excited for, and mark their release dates on our calendars.
