Post Grad Depression And How To Cope With It

So, what is post grad depression you ask? According to an article on Thoughtcatalog.com, “that time after graduation where we’re trying to transition to the ‘real world.’ For years, life has been the same routine of classes, extracurriculars, and the balancing act of holding a job and maintaining a social life. suddenly, it’s all gone. Often, we’re either unemployed or underemployed, wondering if we’ll ever get a chance to put our degrees to good use and if we’re a disappointment. We feel self-conscious about our progress in life.” Here are some ways to cope with post grad depression.

Don’t Compare Your Life To Others

I have done this countless times. I mean, I was still a student but either way, this is a terrible thing to do. I lost my longest friend for two years because of it. I had my own issues, but comparing my life to her life only added fuel to the fire. Of course two years later I realized I acted like a word I cannot say and apologized. However, it wasn’t just her, I find myself doing it now. With a recent failed relationship, recent unemployment, and uncertainty about how to start my writing career, I find it hard to see any positives at the moment. I mean, I see couples in love, new babies, and people posting about getting that job, it’s disheartening.

You have to remember, everybody lives are on different timelines. Just because you have not achieved some of your goals by now doesn’t mean you never will.

Realize Life Doesn’t Always Go As Planned

I am 26 years old. I am in my last semester of college. I thought I would have finished college 5 years ago. I thought I would be a teacher. I did not know that I would have taken years off. I did not know I would have changed my major to professional writing, hell, I didn’t even know I was a really great writer. I didn’t know I would have left Temple U to go to Kutztown U. And you know what, I did not know the guy I fell in love with was a complete d-bag, but that’s a story for another time. What I’m getting at here is life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and that’s ok.

Make A Routine And Gain Some Structure

So you’ve graduated and now you don’t know what to do. Make a productive routine to get some structure in your life and to lead you one step closer to achieving your goals. Start with your regular morning routine, then do job applications. Take a break for a little bit and then go to the gym. Come home, shower, and hang out with your friends.

Know That This Stage In Life Will Pass

This is a really crappy time in your life. You need a job. You want to move out. And honestly, if you’re like me, you want a new romantic relationship. The point I’m trying to make is that there are so many things that you want and need and you feel as if they are unattainable. Well, they aren’t. Remember how I said all those friends of yours seem like they have everything that you want. What makes you think they weren’t at this point that you’re at now? I know you don’t want to hear this, but give it time, be patient. That moment when you stop and realize you have all the things you ever needed and wanted, that time will come but you have to have faith and patience to push through this post grad depression.
