In Texas, barbeque is sacred ground. It’s slow cooked to perfection, as a labor of love, and deserves a special kind of reverence in every bite. From the smoky slow cooked brisket to the sweet and sticky ribs, there’s not a BBQ joint on this list that doesn’t deserve the name. Here are 5 places to get the best BBQ in Houston.

Killen’s

If you plan to make a trip to Killen’s in Pearland, be ready to wait in line. Come rain or shine, people line up to eat Killen’s BBQ. Killen’s BBQ has been Ronnie Killen’s passion project since 2013, and the following for this restaurant is undeniable. Come hungry for the brisket and ribs, but don’t forget to save room for a piece of pecan pie.

Gatlin’s BBQ

Located in Garden Oaks/Greater Heights, Gatlin’s BBQ is the favorite of Houston’s Chris Shepherd, and it’s easy to see why. Gatlin’s has everything and the kitchen sink. No really, they have a sandwich called The Kitchen Sink! Come for their St. Louis style spare ribs and stay for their sausage, three ways.

Pappa Charlie’s Barbecue

Pappa Charlie’s Barbeque is pretty new to the game, starting as a food truck in 2014 and opening its first brick and mortar store in 2015. But what it lacks in age, it makes up in flavor. Whether you’re a brisket or sausage fan, or maybe you’re all about the boudin, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Pappa Charlie’s.

Pinkerton’s Barbecue

Pinkerton’s Barbeque is a true example of Texas-style barbeque. They are slow and low cookers, using a blend of aged post oak and sun-dried mesquite, which is just a fancy way of saying: really good barbeque. Go see them on Airline in the Heights and be sure to try a slice of the Texas chocolate sheet cake!

Roegals Barbecue Co.

Located on Voss, Roegals was recently named one of the Top 50 Barbeque Joints in Texas, according to Texas Monthly. With over 20 years of experience making barbeque, it’s no wonder that Pit Master Russel Roegal has made a name for himself with Roegals Barbeque Co. Come for the brisket, but save room for the collard greens and loaded mashed potatoes. It won’t disappoint!
