It is the beginning of the spooky season, but also cuffing season, which means there are lots of cute fall dates to take your significant other on. And as we all know, dating in college is not always easy, nor is it cheap either. You may feel pressure to impress the person you are with, and expensive dates are an easy way to show you care. Instead of putting yourself in more debt for a date, here are 10 date ideas for under $50.
Bowling is a classic date idea. It is a great way to get to know the person you are with through friendly competition. Bowling gets you both off of your phones and talking. Music Theatre of Denton is set to perform the musical, Newsies, at The Campus Theater. If you and your partner like live entertainment, this is a great way to spend time together. Tickets are normally $25, but students get a discount and get in for $15. The show goes from Oct. 18-20, 24-27. UNT also has multiple shows coming up in the next few months. Admission for students is $12.50.The theater department is also performing Nathan the Wise. A show about religious tolerance with views from Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The show premieres on November 7th and goes until November 10th. The choreography students also host a show fun where they showcase their original works. Everyone loves getting into the spirit of fall with a good ole pumpkin patch visit. Spooky season is upon us, which means the weather is cooling down (finally), the leaves are changing and the most exciting holidays are in sight. Trinity United Methodist Church hosts a month-long pumpkin patch with plenty of family-friendly fun. Anyone is welcome to take home a pumpkin, or two. It is open Monday-Friday 11-7, Saturday 9-7 and Sunday 12-7. It is the perfect opportunity to take cute pictures with your special someone.
Denton has many events with free, or low cost, admission costs that are perfect for cheap dates. If you enjoy the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s music, Game Changers has a free event called Flashback Fridays. If you are 21, you can listen to your favorite throwbacks while sipping retro drinks in this cool bar. Boogie all night long with your favorite person. Well Blended is a free art exhibit that goes until October 15. It is located at UNT on the Square. Every Tuesday there is a social bike ride. This event just requires each participant to have their own bike. It begins at 9:30 p.m. at the UNT Language Building.
It is always fun to challenge yourself, and your date, to see how much you really know. There are multiple trivia nights in Denton that are perfect for cheap dates. Armadillo Ale Works hosts “Trivia Night with Geeks Who Drink” every Monday at 8 p.m. There is no fee to participate, but if you are 21 you might end up buying a couple drinks. Denton County Brewing Company hosts trivia night every other Monday at 7 p.m., which also has free admission. The Movie Tavern holds trivia every Wednesday at 7 p.m., admission is free. The Game Changer Bar and Grill also have their own trivia nights on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. that is free to get into. The top 3 teams win up to $80 in bar cash. There is plenty of free fun to be had on date night.
Board games are another way to get to know each other by unplugging. It can also be a fun double date idea. Get you and your other coupled up buds together, and see who the better couple is. Armadillo Ale Works hosts a free game night on the first Tuesday of every month, from 6-10 p.m. Every Wednesday at 9 p.m., Dusty’s Bar and Grill has their own free game night as well. They have cheap drinks and great food. Do you and your partner like to play video games together? Game Changers Arcade Bar and Grill hosts a Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tournament, every Tuesday from 7-10 p.m. Admission is free.
Dinner and a movie is one of the oldest dates in the book. The Alamo Drafthouse, like many other local theaters, has a student discount. This date may get expensive, depending on how much food you purchase. Why this theater over others, you may ask? It is an overall different experience. They show current movies, as well as screenings of iconic films. The month of October has been deemed “spooky season” and they play to the theme and some of their locations have special viewings of classic scary movies.
Although we are approaching fall, ice cream can be enjoyed year-round. Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream is a cute little shop in The Square. They have all kinds of unique flavors. Beth Marie’s opens every day at 11 a.m. 7 Degrees Fahrenheit is a rolled ice cream shop with crazy combos and a build your own option.
Denton is popular for its variety of live music. If you are a couple that is over 21, enjoys wine and jazz, there is an event just for you. For only $5, Steve’s Wine Bar hosts jazz musicians Tuesday-Saturday from 8-10 p.m. Maybe you even want to be the live music yourself? There are plenty of free karaoke nights. The Loophole has free karaoke every Thursday starting at 9 p.m. UNT on the Square has a different artist every Thursday night at 7 p.m. This event is free.
If yoga sounds like a fun date idea, there are plenty of options. Every Monday from 6-7 p.m., and for a donation of just $5, you can do yoga on the Square. This is held at Andy’s Bar. You will need to bring your own mat. At 5 p.m. every Thursday, Backyard on Bell has $5 yoga. If you and your partner identify with the LGBTQ+ community, there is yoga just for you. Every Saturday at 1 p.m. for $5, the Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hosts inclusive yoga. There is also a free yoga class on Sundays at 1 p.m. at Twisted Yoga Pilates and Yoga.
