Photo editing apps can make creating stunning photos simple, but it can be tiresome wading through all of the options available only to find they aren’t quite what you’re looking for. To help you out, we’ve made a list of our favorites for you to give a try. Keep reading below to find out which ones made the cut!
Turn ordinary, boring pictures into beautifully picturesque works of art with the help of VSCO. Since it doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of editing options, it is incredibly easy to use. With a range of gorgeous free filters for you to apply to your photos, you can give them a saturated, lively appearance or, if you like a more vintage look, a faded and retro appearance. The app also comes equipped with some basic editing options so you can create your own filters and save them to use on other photos. You can download this app for free on both Android and Apple devices.
There is no limit to what you can create with PicsArt. If you were wondering where those cute little details on most “aesthetic” Instagram posts come from, you’ve just found your answer. This app goes beyond just applying filters as it gives you the option to apply artistic stickers, lens flares, doodles, and text on your photos. Other options include fixing blemishes with a tap, smoothing parts of your photo (good for skin), changing hair color and eye color, and more! Search “PicsArt edits” on Pinterest for editing inspiration that will get your creative juices flowing.
The Adobe Lightroom app is a toned down version of its desktop counterpart, but just as powerful. In the app, you can adjust exposure, contrast, white balance, temperature, etc. which are the most basic adjustments you can make to fix the lighting within the photo. It also allows you to adjust color curves in order to color correct photos that are too harsh and breathe life into dull photos. The Adobe Lightroom app is available to download for free for Android and Apple with the option to pay for premium features such as making selections, using the healing tool, and adjusting perspective.
Snapseed contains all of your basic editing tools along with a large range of filters for you to apply to your pictures. Unlike most other photo editing apps, Snapseed has a “healing” tool available for you to use for free. Since healing gives you the ability to edit out unwanted items, most apps consider it to be an advanced or premium feature. So, if there are people in the background of your photo, stray hairs, or blemishes you want to get rid of you can use the healing tool to fix these things for you. This app also gives you the ability to create beautiful double exposures and add text to your pictures. Snapseed is a available for free on both the Android Play Store and the Apple App Store.
For the vintage and retro aesthetic lovers, Afterlight helps you recreate those looks in your photos. Besides the basic editing tools and large collection of filters, this app also gives you the option to add light leaks to your photos so you can mimic the effect of an older camera exposing film to additional light and giving it a sort of flare. There is also an option to give your photos a dusty, grainy look so that they appear to be aged. All of these tools together can help you achieve the perfectly vintage look you’re after. Afterlight is free to download for Android devices but goes by the name Afterlight 2 and costs $2.99 on Apple devices.
Canva is probably the lesser known app of the bunch, but it is just as good! It provides users with lovely templates that are ideal for making creative posts for your Instagram story. With Canva, you can add beautiful text, graphics, frames, textures, and more to your photos. Also, it’s the perfect place to design graphics for Pinterest, YouTube channel banners, logos, collages— The possibilities are endless! Canva is free to download on the Play Store and the App Store.
