13 Things Only People From Twin Cities Understand
Have you heard of a magical snow covered land that resembles Antartica, but has super friendly inhabitants? If not let me introduce you to Twin Cities, Minnesota. Here are 13 things only people from Twin Cities can understand!
1. The word “Ope”
The word “ope” has become a widely used word by midwesterners and people from the Twin Cities are no exception. You bumped into someone? “ope”. Sneeze? “ope”. In a crowded elevator? “ope”. We don’t know why we do it or when it’s supposed to be used, but when you feel an “ope” moment and you’re from the Twin Cities you can’t help but use it.
2. Boat mooching in the summer
Summer time in the Twin Cities is a time where everyone wants to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. After all, we get maybe three nice months of the year before we’re plunged back into the icy tundra that is Minnesota. And if you’re lucky enough to live on one of the 10,000 lakes in Minnesota then EVERYONE, and I mean everyone, including your neighbor, your neighbor’s cousin and that kid that budged you in line to get the last chicken nugget in first grade, will be hitting you up to see if they can go boating with you. Basically if you’re not on a boat in Minnesota you’re either wishing you were or trying to find someone to boat mooch off of.
3. The great Minnesota get together
The great Minnesota get together, also known as the Minnesota state fair is probably the most anticipated event of all year. Wether its deep fried candy bars, sweet Martha’s cookies, or a good ol’ fashioned pronto pup you’re bound to love this fair.
4. Hockey and more hockey
Whether its summer, spring, autumn or winter it’s always hockey season. Almost as soon as you pop out of the womb your parents are popping you into some skates and handing you a stick to see if you’re going to be the next hockey prodigy. Guess there’s a reason why they call us the state of hockey!
5. Construction season and winter
If you ask anyone from Minnesota what our two seasons are they’ll bitterly say ” construction season and winter”.
6. The itch that never goes away
Yes, we may have 10,000 lakes and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country, but with all that nature comes a very tiny, but very real enemy; mosquitos. If you’ve every lived anywhere in Minnesota you will know that the most annoying and infuriating thing to exist are mosquitos. Not only can you feel them sucking away your blood but the awful little itching, red bumps that will haunt you for days sometimes even WEEKS will cause you to hate them more than anything.
7. Soda, pop, and fizzies
It’s pop, don’t fight me on this.
8. 60 degress is actually warm
60 Degrees? You mean summer? After -40 degree temperatures everyone is breaking out their short sleeve shirts and shorts. Summer time has arrived in Minnesota ladies and gentleman!
9. Defrosting your car in the winter
Picture this; it’s Monday morning, you’re running late for work and you see it’s -20 below with windchill outside and your car is completely covered in frost. What do you do? obviously just defrost enough so you can see out of your front windshield and hope that’s all the visibility you need to drive.
10. Layers are our best friend
When spring comes along in Minnesota you expect it to finally start to be heating up right? Wrong. Spring in Minnesota means a never ending war with your wardrobe. When you start your day you start off freezing and by noon you’re taking all your clothes off and suggesting that you and your friends hit the beach ( even though theres still snow on the ground).
