8 Outfits Based On Classic Movies

If you are looking for new inspiration for your outfits, why not look towards the big screen? The characters we see in our favorite movies capture a sense of style that you can recreate for your everyday looks. Here are outfits based on classic movies that never go out of style.

1. The Breakfast Club (1985)

As one of the most iconic movies of the 1980s, the Breakfast Club captured what it was like to go through high school with the labels that people have placed on you. Whether you are a princess or a basket case, everyone is bound to have a character they relate to. The Breakfast Club also captures 1980s fashion without going over the top with neon and unnecessary amounts of hairspray. Each character’s outfit represents their identity in the movie and is completely different from the other characters. You don’t have to be a criminal to appreciate John Bender’s style. The grunge-inspired flannel and denim combination is still trendy today and immediately gives anyone a “bad boy” vibe. Grab your favorite shades, let your hair down, and no one will forget about you.

2. Back to the Future (1985)

For more outfits from the 1980s, let’s turn to one of the best movies about a time-traveling DeLorean. In the first Back to the Future movie, we meet Marty McFly who is a bad boy in his own right. He rides his skateboard behind trucks and can play the guitar at the local school dance. Marty’s outfit is both cool and timeless which makes sense he travels through time in the movies. The denim-on-denim look contrasts greatly with his scarlet vest (or life preserver) which has recently come back in style. Paired perfectly with white high top Nikes or Converse, Marty’s outfit takes the basics of a wardrobe and makes them cool. Can’t say the same for Marty’s 2015 look since power laced Nikes or self-drying jackets haven’t quite taken off yet.

3. Heathers (1988)

For outfits that have more of a chic look, who better to look to than the original high school mean girls. The Heathers might have been the archetype for the beautiful but intimidating cliques in movies, but their coordination skills can not be denied. Their outfits, based on primary colors, make them stand out but also make them appear cohesive. You can decide which color or which Heather you think best suits your personal taste. While appearing more preppy, the matching blazer and miniskirt combination makes for a versatile outfit for formal settings or going out for dinner and drinks. Even if your teen angst BS doesn’t have a body count, an outfit based on this dark comedy will make you feel empowered by yourself or with a clique of your own.

4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

When summer is quickly approaching and the sun is shining outside, how can anyone expect you to go to class or work? No one made ditching look so cool or effortless as much as Ferris Bueller. Bueller was admired for his ability to talk his way out of tight jams and convince everyone of his fatal disease preventing him from going to school. He was also admired for his sense of style which rode the fine line between formal and casual. While he went through many costume changes, the moto jacket Bueller wore for a majority of the movie served as the perfect statement piece to his character. It’s a step above the typical leather jacket incorporating contrasting grays and whites with plenty of zippers to make it utilitarian. Looking for an outfit that’s cool without trying? Definitely a look that’s perfect for looking at priceless artwork, eating at fancy restaurants or driving around with your friends.

5. Pulp Fiction(1994)

Moving on to a darker and edgier decade, the 1990s brought us Pulp Fiction. If you are a fan of this fast-paced crime thriller, you will know that this movie offers plenty of inspiration for outfits. There are, of course, Jules and Vincent who look menacing when wearing their simple black tie suits. Maybe less so when they are forced to change their blood-stained suits for a more casual look midway through the movie. What better way to look inconspicuous than a UC Santa Cruz T-shirt? However, the character that really steals the show is Mia Wallace who is seen going out to dinner with Vincent towards the beginning of the movie. Her outfit is comprised of a white blouse paired with black trousers and gold flats which make for great formal wear that is slightly dressed down. Mia is also seen rocking a bob hairstyle and red nails and nude lipstick. With this outfit, you’ll be sure to win any spontaneous twist contests, no partner needed.

6. Grease (1978)

For a completely different side of John Travolta, look back to the classic musical Grease. Taking place 20 years prior to the release date in the late 1950s, there are plenty of trendy pieces that you can still rock today. Namely, the outfits worn by Danny and Sandy during the song “You’re the One That I Want”. This is meant to be a pivotal point of the movie since Sandy was previously known to be the typical innocent girl. Dressing like a T-Bird was quite a shift but made for a great outfit to replicate. Both she and Danny dress in all black but make it seem lively rather than gloomy. Whether you are more of a Pink Lady or T-Bird, a black T-shirt and jeans are perfect for a summer night out.

7. Mean Girls (2004)

As teen royalty, the Plastics were the ones who decided who and what was cool and what wasn’t. If there is anyone to look to for inspiration for outfits, it would be them. While they are known to only wear pink on Wednesdays, it seems to be the color they are most associated with. With pink being such a vibrant color, it can be a bit overwhelming to wear it head to toe.  If you don’t want to go overboard, a pink cardigan like Regina George herself wore would be perfect. This way, you can wear a complementary shade of pink and contrast it with darker wash jeans. While wearing pink might have been reserved for Wednesdays for them, outfits like this look good any day of the week.

8. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Hollywood in 1969 sounds like a dream, much like the title of this movie suggests. In the movie, Cliff Booth proves that just because he’s a stuntman doesn’t mean that he is only meant to stay behind the scenes. Cliff’s outfit manages to showcase the West Coast vibe of Los Angeles and the period of the late 1960s when surfing was all the rage. He is the definition of calm, cool and collected and so is his choice of a yellow Hawaiian shirt with a vintage T-shirt underneath and medium wash jeans. A pair of sunglasses complete this outfit and will make you want to lower the roof of your convertible and cruise along the coast and drive off into the sunset.
