Our Guide On How To Put Yourself First When Necessary

Looking after your own mental health is beyond important! if you are too busy putting other peoples needs before your own, you need to remember these few things in order to put yourself first when necessary, so that you can thrive and live your best life! 

Friends

Many of us love and value our friends and the relationships we have with them. Friends are so incredibly important, but! it is extremely important to remember that no matter how close you may be with your friends, you don’t have to live your life to make them happy. Spending time with your friends can bring you a lot of joy, but once you have done that remember to take some time by yourself, relax and enjoy spending time by yourself. Don’t be afraid to stick up for yourself if you do not necessarily want to participate in any activities that they may want to do. If doing certain things doesn’t bring you joy then you don’t have to do it, simple as that. No matter how much you love your friends, don’t be afraid to put yourself first.

Alone Time

I know that my favourite way to spend a lot of my time is by myself. I know that not everyone is an introvert, but never the less being alone every now and then is important. It is crucial that you have time to yourself to think about how you are feeling day to day. Is there anything that is making you sad? mad? or even happy? Address what makes you feel good and bad in life so that you can tailor your daily life to get the most out of it. You can’t reflect about your day or your feelings if you don’t have a moment to yourself. Alone time is more important than I can express. But make sure you have a healthy balance of both. And remember, never feel bad for putting yourself first! 

Treat Yourself

After you have reflected on your day and your feelings, and you have analysed why you feel the way you do. Every now and then you just need to treat yourself. Don’t underestimate the power of treating yourself. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways, it can be eating a tub of ice cream, buying a new pair of shoes, or getting your nails done. Treating yourself can bring happiness to you in an instant. The key to this is to make sure you don’t do it very often. This makes sure that the speciality of the gesture remains intact. Take yourself out for an ice cream, do something for yourself that you usually feel is unnecessary. If you are having a bad day for any reason and you need a distraction this is the perfect way to do so. This is a quick, simple and very achievable way to put yourself first.

This is the most important tip I can give. Take a moment to think, what you are about to do, does it make you happy. Now don’t get crazy I am not telling you to quit your job or anything, but any activity that all your friends are doing or someone is asking you to join them in something, if it doesn’t make you happy, you do not have to do it just to please them. Do not spend your life making other people happy at the risk of diminishing your own happiness. This is how you ultimately put yourself first when necessary.
