Our Favourite Memes Of 2019 So Far
Memes are an art form these days and it takes a real winner to capture the attention of the world. So here are our favourite memes of 2019 so far.
1. World Record Egg
It’s not every day you see an egg beat Kylie Jenner for the most-liked photo on Instagram. This now-famous egg arrived on the scene on January 4th 2019, the perfect way to kick off the new year, and ten days later it had beat Kylie’s record reaching 18.4 million likes. It now sits at 53 million likes, making it first place on our list for its breadth of influence and originality. This is a record that’ll be truly hard to ‘beat’.
2. And I oop
The ‘and I oop’ reaction video, originally from a youtube video by drag queen Jasmine Masters took Twitter by storm as it spurred thousands of tweets using the video as the punchline of their jokes for when you’re caught off guard by something and you just “oop”. Jasmine said about her viral meme she thinks it’s “amazing”, and we have to agree!
3. Me explaining to my mum
The ‘me explaining to my mum’ meme has been used as a template on Twitter for almost anything. The most famous example is probably the Club Penguin version of this meme which went viral receiving 557,000 likes and 150,000 retweets, but this meme is so versatile it can be applied to anything you want.
4. Game of Thrones memes
For one point in time, the internet was concerned with one thing and one thing only: Game Of Thrones. As the final season aired Twitter was brimming with memes about the show, the most famous one is probably the passive-aggressive Daenery’s face meme. Whatever you thought of the controversial last season of the show one thing we can all agree on is that the memes were pretty great.
5. This shot is brilliant and should be shown in any film class
So technically this could be a subcategory of the Game of Thrones memes as the original tweet came from a shot from one of the episodes of the final season, however, this meme gained so much attention it really stands out on its own. This is perhaps one of my personal favourites, the ‘this shot is brilliant and should be shown in any film class’ meme is often applied to the most ridiculous movie or television shots are simply perfection.
6. Storm Area 51 they can’t stop all of us
This is a very recent meme that has completely taken over social media, the facebook event page ‘Storm Area 52 they can’t stop all of us’ was set up with the description reading “We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Let’s see them aliens.” The event page has received 1.9 million responses of ‘going’ and 1.4 million ‘interested’, the date is set for September 20th from 3am – 6am, who knows what’ll happen.
7. Mini Keanu Reeves
This edited image of mini Keanu Reeves began to circulate in June 2019, given that Keanu Reeve’s is the ‘internet’s boyfriend’ it didn’t take long for this image to go viral and have several tweets using it as the punchline of their jokes.
8. I don’t know who needs to hear this but
This is a meme that is not only funny but also pretty helpful. This meme can also be related to just about anything whether it’s an opinion or just genuine advice. A great and wise meme.
9. and it shows
This twitter meme spurred from the original tweet about playing wii sports with your siblings and it inspired a whole range of other tweets using the same format of “some of y’all never … and it shows”. This meme tends to resurface weirdly relatable moments that you would never have remembered without it, or it can be used ironically with completely unrelatable moments which is equally as fun.
10. Blackhole
After the first-ever image of a black hole was captured, it wasn’t long before the internet turned it into a huge meme and the results are magnificent.
