Tallahassee is a city full of new restaurants, places, and experiences waiting to be discovered. It’s one of the many reasons why people who attend FSU are so fortunate. What isn’t talked about often enough though, are the on campus activities students should check out. Below are just fifteen of the best on campus activities FSU students are lucky enough to have the chance to do at no extra cost!
Virtual reality is a unique and awesome experience that allows you to see what it’s like to be in a different world from ours. Out of all the on campus activities offered at FSU, this is one you will not want to miss. The Innovation Hub has a great selection of “realities” you can tap into, including Minecraft, Disney movies, epic rollercoasters, mountain climbing, and so many more!
The Askew Student Life Center (ASLC) puts on a variety of different movies, ranging from old classics to more recently released blockbusters. Some that they’ve shown, or are planning on showing this semester include Infinity War, Booksmart, The Star Wars trilogy, Rocketman, The Wizard of Oz, John Wick 3, and Toy Story 4. Why pay $12 for a ticket off campus when you can see awesome movies on campus, for free?
And when Halloween gets closer, they have their annual showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is always a fun experience!
If working out by yourself doesn’t sound appealing, taking a workout class might be the perfect fit! The Leach and the Fitness & Movement Clinic offer a variety of classes for students to take at no extra cost. There’s one for everyone whether you’re looking to focus on your core (Hardcore 30), strength and cardio (HIIT Cardio 45), or flexibility and relaxation (Yoga).
Personally, the spin classes are my favorite to take because it’s a great workout, the music is the best, and I feel like I’m an extra in Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side” music video. But make sure you download the FSU Rec app and reserve any of the classes as soon as you possibly can (25 hours in advance) because they fill up really quick!
As a kid, I loved whenever the circus rolled into town because it meant trapeze acts, camel rides, and of course, cotton candy! That being said, the fact that our campus has an actual circus, that’s led by FSU students nonetheless, is beyond exciting! Students can attend at no extra cost if they simply bring their student ID.
Coming up in October is the Halloween Series that the “Flying High” Circus puts on annually. The performers dress up in costumes and it’ll be a fun, unique way to celebrate “Spooky” season. You won’t want to miss it!
Whether you’ve been playing sports since you were walking, or you have never picked up any kind of ball in your life: it doesn’t matter. Intramural sports are for everyone and with all the different ones to choose from, you’re bound to find one that piques your interest. There are the usual sports such as 3 v. 3 Basketball, flag football, and volleyball. BUT, there are also some more uncommon choices like Battleship, Kan Jam, and Spikeball. Again, with there being no extra cost to FSU students, it doesn’t hurt to try one of these out. Best case scenario, you’ll find something really fun to do!
Florida State has over 750 student organizations on campus, making it the easiest (out of all the on campus activities) to partake in, including Adventure Club, Poetry Club, Film Club and so many more. That being said, students should have no problem finding one, or more likely, multiple that they find to be worthwhile!
Tickets to FSU sports games are free for students, so take advantage of that! The football and basketball games are obviously an awesome experience, largely because of the animated student section, but there are so many other games too. Be sure to check out the Women’s Volleyball team, or the Women’s Soccer team, who won the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship last year! Going to watch a game, live in action, is always exciting!
Years ago, 3-D printing was an up and coming technological advancement, so the fact that FSU students can do so at no extra cost is really cool. Head over to the Innovation Hub and search “Thingiverse” for something to print! Or, you can check out all the things that have already been printed, including a couple of octopuses, a fidget game, a wrench, a hand model, etc!
Whether or not you’re studying Art here at FSU, the MOFA is a place you don’t want to miss! They have a large collection of things, so you’re bound to find something that piques your interest. And it’s also a great place for inspiration!
The Legacy Walk is one of those on campus activities that every FSU student should do at least once. It’s a great way to not only get more familiar with Florida State’s campus and its beautiful architecture, but it’s also an opportunity to learn the history behind it!
Landis Green is the perfect place for students to lounge around in between classes, or at the end of a long day. Read a book, have a picnic, play some games with friends, or take a nap; the possibilities of what you can do are endless and very fun, especially because it will not cost you anything extra. Take advantage of this beautiful area on campus!a
The ASLC has almost a dozen different gaming consoles, including PS2, Xbox, and Wii. They also have a wide selection of games for each of the consoles, which can be found on their webpage!
And if video games aren’t your thing, don’t worry! They also have a lot of board games to choose from!
Market Wednesday hosts a variety of vendors, which makes it the ideal place for seeing things you might not have anywhere else. While there, you might find anything from vintage t-shirts and bomber jackets to trendy pieces, such as cropped Florida State gear, or pastel-colored jean shorts. But that’s not all! Market Wednesday has a small farmer’s market, with a delicious looking (and tasting) selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
There are also sometimes student organizations, fraternities, and sororities that table there, so it could be a great opportunity to learn more about them!
Maybe workout classes are not for you, and that’s okay! Working out at the Leach on your own time, by yourself, is also one of the great on campus activities to do that not only helps you stay healthy but also allows you to take some time to yourself!
Although this might technically be considered off-campus (4 miles to be exact), the Rez is still run by FSU, so I chose to include it. It’s also too great a place to exclude. FSU students can rent paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, and canoes and then take them out on Lake Bradford at no extra cost. There is also a beach area to lounge out on and a roped off section for people to swim around. Going to the Rez is the best way to spend a free day!
On campus activities are the best (free) way for students to de-stress after class and homework, or just spend time with friends. Comment below what your favorite thing to do at FSU is!
