Being a first-year student at Indiana State can be a little overwhelming at times. Who to hang with, who to eat with, and who to study with… these are the biggest concerns a new student has. Here are 15 on-campus activities or events you can enjoy while meeting new students like you!
Going to class is the best way to meet new friends especially the ones that are in your major. You see them every day in similar classes and that means you all have something in common!
You can start longing friendships by walking back from class together with the person you sat next to. Who knows! you might even find your best friend.
Every Residence Hall has a floor meeting when you first start as a freshman so you can get to know your RA (Residence Assistant). This is a great way to meet new students like you who really don’t know much about the campus or know a lot of people. Plus, at every meeting, the RA supplies pizza and snacks! Us college kids love snacks!
If you are religious, then this is the perfect event for y0u! Indiana State has been having student fellowship for years and is the best way to meet new people and get closer to God. This fellowship meets in Hulman Memorial Studnet Union (HMSU) DeDe I every Wednesday at 9pm.
Getting a job! [SIGH] That sounds like a drag but… if you enjoy what you do and you work with the right people, I promise you will have fun. If you love meeting new people and being in charge, Indiana State has a job for students where you can coordinate campus events and/or be on the committee. This is an amazing way to get to know people and genuinely find what you want to do on campus.
Whether you are majoring in biology, journalism, aviation, or criminology, Indiana State has a club for you! Meeting people who have similar ideas and personalities is life-changing and it makes it just a little bit easier to spark up a conversation.
Some majors have it mandatory that you join their clubs and by going to these meetings you will be able to find a friend fast. If you find someone you are interested in, just add them on your socials, get their number and start hanging out to see if you have anything other than “Jazz Band” in common.
Now, I know we are only in the third month of school but more amazing events are popping up on the calendar! The Office of Multicultural Services puts on events to celebrate different cultures that are on campus.
This gives students the opportunity to meet new people and explore different cultures that you didn’t know about. This next event meets up in the HMSU, Dede II on Tuesday, October 8th from 1-2pm. You do not have to be fluent in Spanish to join in on the fun!
Homecoming is finally here and what a great way to meet new friends than the kickoff rally! Talk with your roommate (if you get along) and you both can go together to the kickoff and enjoy food and drinks and start talking with other students just like you.
Indiana States’ homecoming kickoff begins Monday, October 7th at 11 am at the Dede plaza and homecoming ends on October 13th! There are plenty of events happening throughout the week that are enjoyable and you might even see a familiar face.
If you are interested in more Homecoming events check out the Indiana State University Calendar.
Who doesn’t love a good sport to play? Indiana State has a variety of sports teams you can choose from, whether they are intermural or the school team! Joining a team will give you a great exercise as well as allow you to mingle with your classmates and find you a great friend.
Ahhhh, Rush! This is the most fun yet crazy time of the year. Joining a Sorority/Fraternity at Indiana State is one of the best decisions you will ever make. With this type of Organization, you will definitely make life long friends and connections that will last forever.
Rush is a series of social events throughout the third week of college for the students who are interested in Greek LIfe. These events give students the opportunity to learn more about the organization and gives them perspective of what brother or sisterhood really means
Fall Rush is already done with but the informal Spring rush begins at the end of January when class is back in session. This type of rush is called informal because you do not visit every sorority/fraternity and you have to be invited to the house. To learn more about Greek life visit the Panhellenic Association for more info.
Check out this list of Organizations on the Indiana State Website.
Speaking of Greek Life, these organizations host A LOT of events throughout the school year. They host social events to recruit new students like you! If you ever see banners, tents with tables, and balloons you know it is Greek life here to speak with you and interest you in their organization.
Fraternities and Sororities also support great causes and host events to raise money for their Philanthropy. These events consist of a Dance Marathon, Mudd Volleyball, Puppies on the Patio, and they cost little to no money to get involved with!
To all you Shakespearians…yes I am talking to you! Drama club is the best way to get out of your shell to express yourself. Whether you’re an extrovert or not, acting allows you to have fun with one another and opens you up to many possibilities.
The Recreational Center is the best of the best place to find new friends! If you enjoy working out, playing basketball, or simply just watching the basketball players play, this center is for you! The Rec Center is where everyone goes to blow off steam and just be in a fun environment.
This center hosts workout classes upstairs in the dance rooms and has an area to go swimming and play badminton. As soon as you walk in the center to meet up with your friends, the front desk has a list of workout classes that are free with your ID card!
If you love getting to know people while setting an example, The Hulman Memorial Student Union Board is the right organization for you. This group consists of eight committees, each one giving you the opportunity to gain valuable work skills as well as meet new people.
These board members serve as role models for the University through planning events and activities students like them would love!
If I have to say so myself, becoming an Orientation Leader was the best decision I could have made in college! Becoming a leader gives you the opportunity to meet so many people and discovering who you are as a person.
This is a summer job to introduce new students like y0urself to the school and give them a tour. This opportunity allows you to learn more about the school while showing other prospective students a great time!
There is an Orientation Leader Call Out Meeting October 15th from 4-6pm in the HMSU Dede I if you are interested. They will tell you more about the position and other available jobs as well!
Now that you know the best activities to do on campus you have to run through the fountain with your friends! It is tradition that when you meet a new friend you run through the fountain and your friendship will last forever!
Grab a few of your floor friends in your Res Hall and invite them to the fountain. This is the best way to open up and meet new people. This activity is fun and refreshing at the same time!
