As much as we all love The Office and Friends, starting this New Yer our beloved shows are coming off of Netflix. Now, before you cancel that subscription check out these Netflix series that you’ll be binge watching all winter break.
For all you comedy fans that just can’t imagine losing your favorite sitcoms this is the funniest hidden gem on Netflix. Although it’s received more notoriety in the past few years, this show is comedic gold. It features a rich family, the Roses, who recently lost all of their fortune and have to move to a town called Schitt’s Creek. The family members of the Rose family are selfish, narcissistic and anything but down to earth but yet so lovable. The writing in this series is superb but the acting is next level. Starring Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, this series is comedic gold. With only fifteen episodes a season, you’ll finish the series over your winter break. Or if you’re like me, in a single week. I’ve gotten everyone I know hooked on this series and we all debate on if Moira is the single greatest character of all time, which she is.
This new to Netflix original series has taken the internet by storm. Being released in October, this series takes politics to a new level, high school. This series so effortlessly comments on modern politics without causing either side of the political spectrum to protest. It very accurately and honestly depicts politics on a smaller platform and explores the culture of world class politicians on a smaller level. Although it touches on serious matters, in weaves in humor for a perfect balance of a must see show. Broadway star Ben Platt joins icon Gwyneth Paltrow in this powerful binge worthy series.
This is another option for those seeking humor in the absence of Michael Scott. This series humor is far different from that of the Office and touches on more realistic and even serious moments, but it’s all rooted in comedy. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin prove that age has no power over comedy. These women find themselves as roommates after their husbands divorce them to marry one another. These two couldn’t be more opposite, one a pot smoking hippy and the other a country club know it all. Frankie’s raunchy sharp wit against Grace’s conservative demeanor make for some seriously funny scenes.
For all your Criminal Minds fans, this is another option for when you’ve watched the series four times through and want something a little different. Mind Hunters is similar to Criminal Minds in that it’s based off of FBI profilers, except these are the profilers when the program was just beginning. It has a good mix of crime drama intertwined with the factual struggled the FBI went through to get profiling team to be credible. This is also a period piece and throws you back to the 1970’s, so for those that just loved Zac Efron as Ted Bundy, this is a perfect Netflix series to binge.
This serious series takes a very authentic look at sexual assault and the process in which victims go through. It very accurately details the entire process from police reports to doctors appointments to trial. Watching this feels like watching a documentary but it can give you more emotion than that of a documentary, showing more and detailing more than what a normal documentary does. It being fictional but based off of the reality of sexual assault makes it both emotional and vulnerable without detailing the personal account of a specific person. This is a serious series but very interesting and eyeopening to the reality that many people go through. A well thought out series with a cast that really takes the message to heart, this series is a must see.
Like the above series, this real documentary series takes a look at sexual assault but hones in on that of rapper R. Kelly. This documentary series is also very serious and takes an authentic approach to telling the story of the assault victims of R. Kelly and how R. Kelly was able to get away with abusive behavior for so long. An educational and emotional series but like Unbelievable a must see.
If after watching one of the more emotional series you’ll probably want a positive break, Queer Eye is the perfect answer. A group of five gay men go out to transform other peoples lives for the better. This group has a tight bond that will make your heart melt, as you watch them going out and changing the world for the better. Like any other transformation show you hear real stories of peoples lives and struggles but these always end on a positive note, even if you are bawling your eyes out the entire time. The goodness of this show radiates and its such a light hearted easy watching show perfect to bring you our of your winter blues. Quite possibly the most genuine and wholesome show, this is the perfect show to binge watch.
Another lighthearted, positive show but this time with much more humor. Jerry Seinfeld takes various famous comedians in vintage cars and they drive around talking about their career and get a cup of coffee. A simple concept but the perfect answer when you want something positive and humorous. I watched three seasons of this last winter break because its just the perfect thing you need in winter, cuddle up with a cup of coffee and sip along with Jerry and his comedian friends.
So, to be honest I haven’t gotten around to watching this, solely because I’m told once you start watching you literally cannot stop. So, this will be what I’m binge watching all of winter break. This show is set in England in the 1920’s and revolves around a gang who will do anything to get what they want. This crime show will give you all the insights and thrills of life as a mobster.
This series is absolutely top notch. The acting, directing, cinematography; there’s a reason its always a huge Emmy and Golden Globe contender. You’re lying to yourself if you say you don’t care about the royals, and specifically the highest of the royals, Queen Elizabeth. As the longest serving monarch, that woman deserves everyones respect. This series starts at the early part of her life and evolves into her first few days as queen, it gives a dramatized look at her life while still hitting all the major historical points. This isn’t just a series for history nerds, this series is the perfect answer for anyone who wants to know more about the royal family.
Netflix is new to the reality competition series, but they prove that you don’t need live television to make a reality competition work. With Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and T.I leading this series, they are looking for the next big rap star. Unlike singing competitions, this series gives an opportunity for rappers to make it, whereas other competitions are set up for singers to win. The best part about this is you don’t have to wait a week for results if you don’t want too. They air a new episode every Wednesday so if you started from the beginning, you’ll have to wait but if you are behind you can watch all the old episodes in a row. And if you miss a week you don’t have to worry about trying to find the results online, you can just stream it whenever you want.
This series is also a more dramatic yet very realistic story. Based off of a true story, this tells about five young black men, wrongful convicted of a crime. Although, it’s not a documentary, it’s similar to that of Unbelievable where its details and storyline are derived from factual events and this exact story is based off of a real life case. This four part series will have you watching in one sitting, on the edge of your seat. This heartbreaking series, brings to life the very real story of five men and their journey through wrongful conviction and their eventual truth being unfolded.
Anything with Renee Zellweger is a must see for me. This thrilling series is perfect for those looking for a soap opera level drama but with much better acting. It’s similar to Grey’s Anatomy or Gossip Girl in the fact that it’s almost too dramatic to believe, but the acting makes the actual story seem plausible. It also comments on the very real problems with businesses and what people are willing to do to reach the level of success they crave.
This comedic suspenseful series is anything but what you’ve seen. Two widows navigate the sudden deaths of their partners in a series that will constantly keep you guessing. With humor and thrill pieced together, this series will have you streaming it all winter break. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini play off of each other perfectly and their anything but ordinary characters are both charming and frightening.
If Richard Madden was my bodyguard, I’d be throwing myself into dangerous situations any time possible. But since that can’t happen, watching the body guard while drinking hot chocolate is going to have to be a good second. The Bodyguard is perfect for anyone who likes action and fast paced shows. What most action shows lack is usually a strong plot, but this show thrives in both regards. An intense plot and constantly evolving story with an action packed scenes are perfect to keep you awake and interested during winter break.
