12 Netflix Series To Binge Watch This Autumn

Netflix is a life saver when it comes to cold autumn days in and the boredom of studying. If you’re looking for a new series to binge-watch then these 12 are a great place to start.

1. Jane The Virgin

As a young girl Jane promised her abuela that she would remain a virgin until marriage but, now a young woman, things become very complicated. Following a routine check up at the gynaecologist that goes very wrong, Jane is artificially inseminated. From there things get even crazier. There are love triangles, murders, long lost famous fathers and even evil twins, but throughout it all the characters are charming and you’ll find yourself entirely invested in their lives. Poking fun at telenovelas, the show is absolutely hilarious and is definitely the thing to brighten up the colder autumn months.

2. Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends

Everyone loves Louis Theroux – the most adorkable documentarian out there – and thankfully Netflix does too. While you should definitely binge watch everything he’s done, starting with Weird Weekends is a good idea. Over the course of three series, Louis visits survivalists, porn stars, body builders and many more bizarre places and people. As always, Louis gets stuck in no matter where he goes, making for some truly fascinating adventures. When you’re buried under tonnes of uni work, why not take some time out to binge his documentaries?

3. Derry Girls

Derry Girls is a British sitcom set in Ireland during the troubles. The series follows a Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James as they attend a girl’s catholic school, get into tonnes of trouble and navigate the complications of teenage life. It’s heart warming, hilarious and completely charming, the perfect fodder for any binge watch session. 

4. The Great British Bake Off

Everyone’s mad about Bake Off right now but what do you do when it comes to an end? Watch the old series on Netflix of course! Relive all the best moments from series 1-7 and travel back to the days of Mary Berry and Mel and Sue while you should probably be studying. It may also get you in the mood for baking which, let’s be honest, is never a bad thing.

5. Stranger Things

As one of Netflix’s most successful series, if you haven’t already binged on Strangers Things then you’re really missing out. Autumn is the perfect time to dive into this series and get into the spooky spirit for Halloween. It may also give you some inspiration for a costume! Beginning on the night of young boy, Will Byer’s disappearance, strange things start to happen in the small town of Hawkins. As his friends desperately search for him it becomes clear that a mysterious local lab has released a dangerous creature into the area. Will they get to Will in time?

6. Friday Night Dinner

Friday Night Dinner is an absolute student favourite so, if you haven’t seen it yet, get onto Netflix and get stuck in. The sitcom features the Goodman family as they have their Friday night dinner, a weekly event which inevitably ends in chaos. With visits from their strange neighbour, Jim, things always take an unexpected turn with hilarious results. If you’re looking for something to put a smile on your face after a long day or want to watch something with friends then it’s perfect. 

7. Doctor Foster

Doctor Foster is a totally binge-worthy British drama, perfect for getting stuck into on long autumn evenings. Gemma Foster is a local GP with a seemingly perfect life but everything is turned on its head when she begins to suspect that her husband is having an affair. Rather than confront him, she bribes a patient to spy on him for her and, as she digs deeper, finds out that his mistress is pregnant and her husband is involved in some shady business deals. Determined to get revenge, Gemma plans a way to expose him and get him out of her life forever.

8. Bad Education

If you want something light hearted and funny, Bad Education is a great choice. Featuring everyone’s favourite posh comedian, Jack Whitehall, as secondary school teacher Alfie Wickers, the series follows him and his class through various funny situations. The series was so successful that the BBC even made a follow up movie so you know it’s got to be good! It’s another great show to binge watch with friends or housemates for a night in during colder autumn days.

9. A Series Of Unfortunate Events

A Series Of Unfortunate Events were the books of our childhood and everyone loved the movie too so why not give the Netflix Original series a go? With Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, Lemony Snickett’s surreal and dark story is told from start to finish over the course of 3 series. Beginning as the Baudelaire orphans discover that their parents have perished in a fire, they are soon adopted by a mysterious Uncle Olaf, an evil man bent on getting at their fortune. This leads to series of misadventures as they try to escape his clutches while also finding the truth about what happened to their mother and father.

10. Manhunt: The Unabomber

If you like to binge watch all of Netflix’s true crime series then Manhunt: The Unabomber should be next on your watch list. A fictionalised version of the Unabomber case, the series follows the FBI as they scramble to find and arrest the man who is mailing bombs to newspapers, universities and airlines across the United States. When a sinister manifesto is sent out to the media, linguistic expert, Jim Fitzgerald, rushes to use his skills to come up with a suspect before more people are hurt.

11. The Crown

When it comes to period drama the crown is absolutely fantastic. Following Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne and the dramas of royal life, The Crown is a fictionalised version of real life that tells historical events from a perspective you’ve never seem them from before. With new series on the way, it is perfect binge-watch material that you can get stuck into for weeks.

12. Inside No.9

Inside No.9 is a British anthology series perfect for anyone with a dark sense of humour. Each episode tells a new story from haunted houses and witch hunts to burglaries and murder. Full of twists and turns, you never know what to expect meaning that even after a long binge-watching session you won’t get bored.
