My First Night Out in College, As Told By Freshmen

I came to realize within seven hours of arrival in New Orleans, Louisiana that college is not reminiscent of the typical high school experience I was used to. It doesn’t consist of mediocre parties getting shut down at 12 am, followed by scouring the food pantry and late night episodes of Sex and the City (actually the Sex and the City/binge-eating part is alarmingly applicable to many nights I’ve had here).

If high school social life were a scoop of Dreyer’s vanilla ice cream, college social life would be three scoops of vanilla Häagen-Dazs with Oreos and whipped cream crumbled on top. And that’s pretty much the gist of what I learned on my first night out as a freshman at Tulane University.

It’s hard to go wrong on a Friday night in New Orleans (and very easy for it all to go wrong simultaneously). An innocent night at the #1 college bar in the nation, The Boot (located directly across from Tulane’s campus) is almost non-existent. My friends and I quickly came to learn this when we found ourselves in the middle of a dance circle as the DJ blasted “Get Low” at 2 in the morning. We got down, quite low. I didn’t know I would find myself in so many different, unique situations in the midst of about 6 hours I had been at college. Here’s a list of quotes and experiences from anonymous Tulane freshman on the events that occurred within their first night out in college; on campus and around the city of New Orleans.

“I helped an upperclassmen fraternity boy make his bed (tucked in the fitted sheets and put on the pillow cases and all) just out of pure hospitality. Their house was such a disaster I thought it was the least I could do.”

“I just consumed a pancake the size of my face, all by myself. Not only that but also an order of Love-Me-Tender chicken tenders with a side of fries. Oh and a milkshake. I’m never letting myself go to City Diner again because this is how I’m going to gain the Tulane Twenty.” – At City Diner (open all night, it’s Tulane’s go-to stop for midnight meals)

“Somehow I ended up with bottle of Manischewitz from the Hillel. I’m not even Jewish, so I don’t know how I ended up there in the first place.”

“I danced to 80’s rock tunes with a drag queen on Bourbon Street at 2 in the morning.”

“My friend made out with our Uber driver. Obviously he gave us a five-star rating.”

“I was just returning from a night out and was sitting in my residence hall’s common room. This guy had a guitar and I asked him if I could play it. Soon as I knew it, the security lady at the front desk was filming me and we were both singing Jason Mraz at 3 in the morning.”

“Everyone in The Boot was doing the cupid shuffle. I’d say our school spirit is most evident in that crazy, little bar.”

She loves John Hughes 80’s movies and tries not to play her guitar too loudly in her residence hall, but usually that doesn’t work out too well. She loves to blog and explore New Orleans in her free time and she will never pass down a macaroon.
