Chandler Bing
Portrayed by actor Matthew Perry, Chandler was born to Nora Tyler Bing, an erotic romance novelist, and Charles Bing, a gay female impersonator, and star of a Las Vegas drag show called “Viva Las Gay-gas” as Helena Handbasket. Chandler’s parents announced their divorce to him over Thanksgiving dinner when he was nine years old, an event that causes him to refuse to celebrate the holiday in his adulthood and develop his sense of humor as a defense mechanism. Chandler has a very good sense of humor and is notoriously sarcastic. In college, he lived with his good friend Ross Geller. In the first episode of the series, we are introduced to the character by him explaining that his wife is a lesbian and they are getting a divorce – his first of three divorces on the show. Notably, while getting married to Emily in London, he says Rachel’s name at the altar, which leads to his second divorce.
