Multi-Use Items Every Student Should Have in Their Dorm

Space is so hard to find in dorms that everything needs to be a multi-use item. Every table, desk, or coat rack will be more useful if there was another use for them, even if you wouldn’t normally have two uses for it. You would find more space with fewer items cluttering up the dorm. These items will help you create more space for the things you don’t have multiple uses for.

1. Bed Space Saver Shelf

This storage shelf goes over the headboard of your bed. It’s 86 inches tall, so it should fit below the ceiling, and it’s 44 inches wide, so it should fit around your bed. The shelves are 12 inches deep, which would fit what you need. It is a great size for your college dorm, giving you plenty of space to store what you need to find space for in your dorm.

This shelf is designed for a twin XL bed, so your dorm room is the perfect fit for this multi-use item. There are two shelves that you can use for whatever you would like, you could even use each shelf for something different. There is enough room under the bottom shelf for your head without hitting anything, so it should be a comfortable fit. Books and other school supplies would fit nicely in the bed space saver shelf. But you could also use it to hold plants or picture frames, anything you can think of, really.

2. Coat-Hanging Wall Decals

These wall stickers are great multi-use items. They serve three purposes. There is a stick-on mirror, a chalkboard or whiteboard, and coat hooks. The three things this item helps with are the most common three issues dorm rooms have. It is difficult to have a mirror on a wall, and finding room in your closet for coats is difficult, too. This is a good item for when you have too many coats and not enough hangers in your closet.

This can be hung by the door, so you can grab your coat on the way out of your room. Or, you can swap your sweatshirt for a winter jacket easier as you’re leaving the dorm. The mirror, even though it’s a sticker, works just as well as a glass mirror. Your reflection will still look the same as a real mirror would. The chalkboard or whiteboard is a good way to remind yourself of something as you’re running out the door. And there are enough hooks to hang your hats and coats for easy access.

3. Cubby Connected Tables

This is a table and a shelf, definitely a good multi-use item. It is made entirely of wood, making it easy to move around. Slots are cut into the sides, allowing you to move the pieces around to where you want them. Or a different version has drawers underneath the table part that still allows you to have storage under instead of taking up some of the space on the table for storage.

The table is small enough to fit in a hallway and still allows people to walk by, so it would be a nice addition to a college dorm. It won’t stick out from the wall very far, so you could still store other things underneath the table itself. The table is a light color wood and the cubbies or drawers are a darker color, making it easy to tell the two parts apart. The cubbies or drawers on top of the table come in two different sizes, a large one and a small one. The two cubbies or drawers can move around, based on how much space you need.

4. Sharing Swivel Shelves

This bookcase is an excellent multi-use item to have because you can put both books and anything else you might need in it. It is the perfect thing to put next to your desk for easy access to your books. It’s a nice spot to place your picture frames or plants, too. Even a fish tank could fit on the shelves of this bookcase.

It has shelves for your personal books. And it also has an area that acts like cubbies. You can use it to store school books or you can use it as actual cubbies. It is a good way to store whatever you have leftover after that doesn’t fit in a specific area. Anything can be put in it, and it is small, so it doesn’t take up a lot of space. You can use the cubbies as a bureau for your clothes, giving you more space in your closet. Or you can use it to hold your shoes, keeping them all in one spot.

5. Contemporary Strap Shelving

In case you haven’t noticed, bookcases are one of the many things that dorm rooms a lacking. Hopefully, this has made you all aware of how important they are in a dorm room. This multi-use bookshelf hangs on the wall like a backpack would on your back. The shelving attaches to straps or ropes that hang on the wall.

You can put books on the shelves, or you can store little knick-knacks on the shelves. Anything you want to put on the shelves can go there. The shelves don’t stick out too far from the wall, so you can even hang them behind a door. Since it doesn’t stick out from the wall very far, it can only be used for the smaller books. You don’t really want the books to be hanging over the end of the shelf. It’s easy to move, so you can take it down and put it up somewhere else. You can also take it down completely, and put it away for when you need it again.
