Movies On Netflix That Are Worth Watching

Netflix was one of the first streaming services and is still viewed as one of the best. With so many movies in the Netflix library, how do you know which ones are worth your time? We are here to help! Here are a few movies on Netflix that are worth watching

Dolemite Is My Name

This Netflix original tells the real-life story of Rudy Ray Moore’s 1975 classic blaxploitation film Dolimite. It gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the making of Dolimite and how it affected Rudy Ray Moore and other actors. It has an all-star cast with Eddie Murphy playing Dolimite and Wesley Snipes as the eccentric director of the film. It explains how it launched Rudy Ray Moore’s acting and writing career from being a struggling comic to an underground legend.

Dolemite Is My Name is Eddie Murphy’s first film in quite a while. He is funny as always but also has a dramatic tone in certain scenes. Wesley Snipes also do a great way of capturing the outrageousness of D’Urville Martin, the director of Dolimite. The film also has a great wardrobe. It is full of loud and bright colors that really help set the 1970s time period. The outfits help immerse the audience even more into the film.

It might be a good idea to go watch the original Dolimite before watching Dolemite is My Name so you have a better understanding of the film. The movie is hysterical and lead to a handful of sequels. You will still enjoy Dolimite Is My Name without seeing Dolemite but it will definitely help your movie-watching experience.  Overall the film is a fun blast from the past and captures Rudy Ray Moore’s personal life very well. If you like movies like Black Dynomite or Jackie Brown, you must check out Dolemite Is My Name.

Brick

Brick is a very unique film. This 2005 indie flick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and was directed by Rian Johnson. It blends the old school neo-noir mystery films from the 40s and 50s with an early 2000s coming of age movie. This might sound a bit odd but Brink pulls it off fantastically. It is full of twists and turns that will satisfy any murder mystery fan. Brick also doesn’t overdue the coming of age narrative making it a great film for all ages.

The film revolves around a high school student named Brendan who receives a phone call saying his ex-girlfriend’s body has been found murdered. Instead of going to the police, Brendan decides to solve the murder himself. He must step out of his comfort zone in order to deal with some of the roughest kids in town that resemble crime lords and gangsters instead of high school students. Brendan must put all the bizarre clues he has uncovered together to find out the truth of what happened to his girlfriend.

The way the film mixes genres makes it truly one of a kind. Every time you feel like you are a step closer to uncover the truth, something happens that pushes you back to the very beginning. The acting in Brick is suburb and help make Joseph Gordon-Levitt a household name. Brick is a must-see for anyone into movies like Dick Tracy or The Maltese Falcon.

Gangs of New York

Fans of gangster movies might remember this 2002 epic drama directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. Gangs of New York gives you an inside look at gang life in 1946 Manhattan. The film does a great job balancing drama, action, and romance. It can appeal to almost anyone no matter a person’s personal move preference.

Bill The Butcher is the leader of a gang that controls a violent area of Lower Manhattan known as Five points.  Amsterdam must make a name for himself in the gang world if he wishes to take revenge for his father’s murder.

Gangs of New York was highly praised by critics as well as movie fans when it was first released in theaters. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Picture. The film does an amazing job capturing the grittiness of Civil War-era Manhattan. The acting is top-notch with Danial Day-Lewis playing one of the most initiating roles of his career.
